    The film’s trailer:

It looks fantastic. Like a live-action Miyazaki. I can see this making the BP line-up.

    Wallis is happening!

This is definitely on my “Must See” list. Wallis looks like a little powerhouse.

    Will Smith must be furious!

Not for me, though; watching people eat crabs makes me sick.

I currently have Wallis in my predictions. Damn, that trailer was compelling.

Well, I weep everytime I see that trailer(s). I do believe the Auroch is one of my totems. A must-see, for me.

Really?  Really?    Based on this trailer, which I’ve seen?

If this makes it in and THG and TDKR don’t, then the Grammys will be popping champagne corks again as their streak of beating the Oscars in the ratings will be 2 years running.   If any combo of Avengers, TDKR and The Hobbit for example, indeed rise to the level of everyone’s expectations and hits it out of the park, then along with THG should get BP-nommed for next year.  Ideal showdown; 3 critic/fan favorites vs. 3 arthouse festival circuit (read: critics-only favorites).   Then see the Oscar ratings soar.

There goes Vampirella’s doppelganger, the Yin to his Yang. Two peas in a pod, twins.

You have seen neither film – how can you judge that TDK will be more worthy a BP nominee than this? Please, explain how you “know” this.

I have no idea if this is worth the hype, but this got a better reaction at Sundance than Precious did a couple years ago from both audiences and critics.

Yes, really Paul. I’ve seen THG, I’ll be seeing The Hobbit, The Avengers, TDKR, and also Battleship AND as many smaller, critically acclaimed films as well. Why should I, or anyone, limit ourselves to only some types of film endeavors?
On the other hand, you may have a point re Oscar…….

I see Avengers this Saturday.  I stressed (or thought I did) that IF TDKR, Avengers or The Hobbit rise to the level of their respective fan bases hype and are actually great movies, then yes, any combo of them should join THG in the best picture category. Remember, critics and moviegoer unity on how good these films ultimately are will be the deciding factor.  If they stink, all of them, then they don’t get invites to the 2013 Oscar BP race. Cut and dry.

Paul… Honey Boo… Give up on ‘The Hunger Games’ for Best Picture. I thought ‘The Hunger Games’ was great too, and yes, it made a lot of money, but it’s not going to happen. Regardless of our personal opinion (and it’s still early, so I may see 10 more films this year that I like more), the overall critical consensus was good, not great (MC= 67/100, RT= 84%/100%).

I don’t always agree with your opinions, but I respect what you contribute to these forums. I just don’t want you to spend the better part of this year raving and ranting for what I ultimately feel will be a lost cause. Besides, you too might end up seeing films later this year that you find to be worthier Best Picture nominees. I just hope you do give some indie films a chance and don’t automatically dismiss them because they weren’t B.O. smashes. Unfortunately, more often than not, a lot of great films go widely unseen.

I think you are getting your hopes up too, Paul. If we look at each years top earners how many of them have made it into the BP race since we’ve moved to 5+ nominees? Avatar and Up. Are there any others? I don’t see any evidence that financials have anything to do with scoring Oscar nominations. I do, however, think money cost Hugo the BP Oscar WIN though. Its nomination was always secure due to its critical backing.
