    HIGHLIGHTS:

    • Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Marion Cottilard and Anne Dorval getting nominated, which means they could be surprises for the Oscars
    • Queen Tilda Swinton getting nominated. Please please please let her pick up steam and get in at the Oscars
    • Inherent Vice getting a surprising nomination in Supporting Actress for Katherine Waterston, and expected nominations in Cinematography and Adapted Screenplay
    • Love is Strange getting into Best Picture. It could be a dark horse for the Oscars
    • Best Original Song, especially Glenn Campbell’s song getting in, as well as Ethan Hawke. He could get his fifth Oscar nomination here.

Thrilled Tilda Swinton got in for Snowpiercer and that Grand Budapest Hotel is getting plenty of love. Guess I have to see Love Is Strange though since it is getting love here and the Spirit and Gotham Awards.

Do not get excited, guys. These are Satellite Awards. They’re even bigger joke than Critics Choice and Golden Globes.

Was “Big Eyes” eligible or was it just snubbed across the board?

Wow. No Meryl Streep (minus the ensemble win).

Getting plenty of love is a bit of an overstatement. I’m glad it got 3 nominations, but Fiennes was left off an expanded BA lineup, and it got totally snubbed for screenplay.

Love the support for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The LEGO Movie (especially the Original Screenplay nom!), but I want to say that Andy Serkis was so the lead in that film.

I like the Satellites.  I swear that some cities only have like two critics, so I do not know why every one needs its own awards.  The Satellites seem less self-important to me and more of an “organization”.  Calling Boston more important than Detroit seems pretty arbitrary; the Satellites fit more into a special class with the Globes and whatnot and I am more likely to value them as a precursor as such.  I also like how they award stuff like sound and visual effects.  Hardly any other groups than BAFTA do this and it is nice to have another precursor for these below-the-line categories to help formulate Oscar predictions.
