Oprah has joined the cast of Ava DuVernay’s “Selma.” She is also producing the film.

Winfrey will play Annie Lee Cooper, an elderly woman who tried to register to vote and was unfairly denied by Sheriff Clark. She was a visible leader amongst the civil rights protesters in Selma.

The drama follows MLK’s landmark 1965 voting rights campaign, which is regarded as the peak of the civil rights movement.

The film stars Oprah’s ‘Butler’ co-star David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr.; Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King; Tom Wilkinson as Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson; Cuba Gooding Jr. as Fred Gray; Common as James Bevel; Wendell Pierce as Rev. Hosea Williams; Stephan James as John Lewis; and Nigel Thatch as Malcolm X.

Winfrey earned an Oscar nomination for her performance in Steven Spielberg’s “The Color Purple.” She most recently played Oyelowo’s mother in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler.” In addition to “Selma,” Winfrey is a producer on DreamWorks’ “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” which hits theaters in August. She’s represented by WME.

More people should be talking about this.

Tim Roth as George Wallace is intriguing.

    Oscar bait!!!

Now will this go in the way of 12 Years a Slave’s Oscar run or Oprah Winfrey presents Lee Daniel’s The Butler’s?

I thought this was a television film? I didn’t know it was a motion picture?!

So this obviously won’t be getting the festival push. I think they’re gonna try and pull a “Wolf” or “Hustle” with the late release.

That was obvious. Maybe Berlin 2015!

I hope this does well, but I’m not sure of its chances with awards.

I think if Tim Roth pulls off a Michael Fassbender-type villainous performance, then he could get some buzz.

However, with this cast, I can’t help thinking it will end up like The Butler – too many famous faces in cameo roles. However, I hope Ava (who is a great director), does something great with this subject matter and it doesn’t end up like either 12 Years a Slave or The Butler, because neither were amazing.

I certainly enjoy watching many of these cast members. Ava’s worked with David Oyelowo before and I think he’s very watchable. I think he’s terrific in The Butler.

I’ve been a fan of Tim Roth’s since Rob Roy and before that Reservoir Dogs. I wonder how much time his character spends in a wheel chair?

Tom Wilkinson can do no wrong imo and I’ve followed Ribisi since he was “lightning boy” on the X-Files.

I like supporting these types of films and I certainly hope the film isnt another rehashed same old. same old. With that exceptional cast, I am hoping not.

I’ve only seen one film directed by Ava Duvernay, which is Middle of Nowhere. I enjoyed that film and she is a woman, so hopefully after this I’ll want to keep up with her work.

Very excited to see David Oyelowo get the lead. He was also very good in Lee Daniels’ “Paperboy” (a campfest, but gruesome fun) playing a duplicitous reporter who double-crossed his lover (played by McConaughey). He’s in “Interstellar” as well, but I think it’s only a very small role.

    Interesting details have leaked.

    – Shot quickly, movie wrapped on July 3rd, only over by 2 days
    – Cast was said to be crying during table reads
    – Oprah’s role is VERY small (dont predict her)
    – Carmen Ejogo’s category placement is still up in the air
    – David Oyelowo scared cast. “It was Martin Luther King talking on set”.
    – Ava said to be working 18 hr days to finish post-production
