I’m just as excited about Sicario‘s strength with the guilds, but let’s be honest. This is still just 5/6 guilds so far and there are other higher profile films that have also hit 5/6 guilds.

Bridge of Spies: PGA, SAG, WGA, ADG, ASC
    Mad Max: Fury Road
: PGA, SAG, ACE, ADG, ASC
The Revenant: PGA, SAG, ACE, ADG, ASC
Spotlight: PGA, SAG, WGA, ACE, ADG

Which guilds you throw weight behind is up to you 🙂

I’ve pretty well tossed aside my rule book for how this whole thing usually goes and am letting Jesus take the wheel on the derby from here on out. Good on Sicario though!

Bridge of Spies, The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road don’t have SAG. Spotlght doesn’t have ACE and ADG.

Bridge of Spies and The Revenant have SAG if you count their actors being nominated.

No they don’t. That’s not what makes a Best Picture honour at SAG. The overall award of the body (SAG Ensemble) carries the weight. The Ensemble award is their overall “best film” honour.

Just because Still Alice got Juliane Moore an Actress nomination at SAG, doesn’t mean it was ever in the running for Best Picture

Nightcrawler (AFI, CCA, NBR): 1 Oscar nomination
PGA, WGA, SAG, ACE, ADG, MHG

Gone Girl (CCA, NBR): 1 Oscar nomination
PGA, WGA, SAG, ACE, ADG, CDG, CSA, MHG, MPSE, SCO

Saving Mr. Banks (AFI, CCA, NBR): 1 Oscar nomination
PGA, SAG, ACE, ADG, CDG, LMGA, PUG, SCO

Moonrise Kingdom (AFI, CCA): 1 Oscar nomination
PGA, WGA, ACE, CSA, CDG, MPSE

    Bridesmaids (AFI): 2 Oscar nominations
PGA, WGA, SAG, ACE, ADG, CDG

The Town (AFI, NBR): 1 Oscar nomination
PGA, WGA, SAG, ADG, CSA, SCO

All of this is to say that it is a lot easier to get guild nominations than Oscar nominations.  Most of the guilds have many more nomination slots and categories than at the Oscars.  So if you consistenly rank tenth, you can get a boatload of guild nominations.  But the Oscars use a preferential ballot for nominations in just about every category.  Even if you are fourth or fifth on everyone’s ballots because you are widely visible and liked, you are going to get pushed out by something with a small pocket of diehard support, like Amour, The Tree of Life, Winter’s Bone and so on.  All of this applies to Straight Outta Compton too.  And sometimes, even if you can translate that guild support into a bunch of Oscar nominations, it is still not enough for a Best Picture nomination.

    Foxcatcher (AFI): 5 Oscar nominations
PGA, SAG, ADG, CSA, MHG, WGA

Blue Jasmine: 3 nominations including 1 win
PGA, WGA, SAG, ADG, CDG, CSA

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (AFI, NBR): 5 nominations including 1 win
PGA, DGA, WGA, ACE, ADG, ASC, CDG, CSA, MPSE

Star Trek (NBR): 4 Oscar nominations including 1 win
PGA, WGA, SAG, ACE, ADG, CAS, CDG, CSA, MPSE, VES

Sicario has already missed SAG and AFI, so it is not infallible.  It got ACE and ADG, but so did seventy and ninety percent of the above.  DGA would really help and that would make it look suspiciously like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the only one of the above to get DGA and ASC and nearly the only one to miss SAG.

Going back to my original point that Sicario was the only to score Across the board over the last 3 days with the 5 guilds.

I know BoS, MMFR, Martian and Revenant have 4 of the guilds backing.

Spotlight and TBS have SAG backing and I feel one of BoNN, SOC and Trumbo will get in the BP lineup, hopefully Trumbo (one of my favourites)

But Sicario is flirting in that 10th position, I think we may have a full house this year ie. 10 BP nominees

Ofc it doesnt i know that. This is going to be interesting year though, since 3 of the best ensamble nominees might miss the cut at the oscars.

Point noted thedemonhog. Sicario will probably just miss out. Great year though, so unpredictable, can’t wait for Oscar Nominations morning or rather Oscar Nominations afternoon as I live in the UK!

Your stats are flawed there. It only counts if it’s a SAG ensemble nomination, not for an individual category like Supporting Actor.

The only morality in a cruel world is chance.

Who cares if it is an ensemble nomination or not in this case?  Like I said, I even included guilds that do not have equivalent Oscar categories.  And Sicario got zero SAG nominations, ensemble or not.

Pete Hammond said on Tom’s podcast that there is a consistently growing buzz for Sicario. I’m saying it gets in

But that’s to suggest that the ASC has anything to do with determining Best Picture.

If an actor from a high profile, Best Picture contender is recognized for an individual honor by SAG then that shows that the actors branch has a) watched the film and b) finds merit in it. That’s being recognized by SAG. Sorry you disagree, but the concept that only the SAG Ensemble award has anything to do with guild recognition is a concept born from and promoted by pundits and only pundits–most of whom have been wildly off base this entire year.
