here are mine, what are yours?

this is the only category that actually does have a preferential ballot. I believe if all the categories had preferential ballots we would get lots of surprise winners.

    1. Call Me By Your Name. Beautiful, moving, intense, great acting, production, a superb adaptation, brilliant direction, intelligent, and it contains my favorite performance of 2017 by Timothee Chalamet as Elio! (:

    2. The Post. I felt this film is quite radical, whcih is why I think it is getting undeserved bricks thrown at it. I loved it. The relationship between the owners and the people they are reporting on is explored in ways that are interesting and timely. It shows the vast difference between today’s newspapers and the integrity some had in 1971. She (Kay) makes a difficult moral decision and makes the right one. one of Spielberg’s very best films.

    3. Lady Bird. Excellent, full, well written, directed, produced and acted by a superb ensemble cast. Captures its world perfectly!

    4. Phantom Thread. I found the film a bit cold, the characters too unlikeable for my taste, but extremely well made. 3 superb performances.

    5. The Shape Of Water. Would I be tempted to rate it higher if I were an actual voter?

    6. Dunkirk. Technically proficient and entertaining. I had a problem with one confusing sequence and a lack of any character development. Very enjoyable; a directorial achievement more than anything else.

    7. Darkest Hour. I wish I had been more moved by it. Again, technically proficient. Actually, this is a are year: I really like 7 of the 9 nominees. The script needed to be fuller and richer, it just missed the mark for me.

    8. Get Out. I just didn’t enjoy this one.

    9. 3 Billboards. I hated it. I have heard all of the arguments for it, I would place it last if I were an Oscar voter. It made me angry in so many ways ):

So disappointed they didn’t nominate The Florida Project ):

Have Not Seen:  Dunkirk, Phantom Thread

    1. Get Out (such clever and scathing satire, excellent screenplay, ensemble perfect, not happy that it missed an editing nom)

    2. Call Me By Your Name (gorgeously acted, respectful adaptation, emotionally tender, leaves you with a bittersweet feeling that lasts for a couple days, Chalamet is the performer of the year, wish it had given Hammer more to do as Oliver is more fleshed out in the book)

    3. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, MO (relevant and beautifully conflicted, well-acted, excellent screenplay, did have a slight problem with Dixon’s arc and the pacing toward the end, ultimately a story less about forgiveness and more about understanding which is what I think a lot of people are missing, clearly this movie is challenging people and THAT IS ART-art shouldn’t always make you feel perfectly comfortable)

    4. Lady Bird (great acting and screenplay, Metcalf is the female performer of the year, more political and social relevance than it’s being given credit for, not particularly innovative in terms of plot and Ronan slightly overrated)

    5. The Post (good plot and pacing until the end, hate that corny ending, didn’t allow its actors to really show off, even ripped off Streep a bit, why would you waste Sarah Paulson, just why?)

    6. The Shape of Water (great performances except maybe a little overrated Spencer, just a bit weird for my taste, Michael Shannon’s story arc didn’t quite make sense to me, strong beginning and end but weak middle)

    7. Darkest Hour (just an average period piece, enjoyed the cinematography, liked Mendelsohn, Oldman was good especially toward the end but a bit overrated)

The Florida Project should definitely be here.  Most painful snub of the day.

Interesting how everyone has 3 Billboards (above at 1,2,3,5,9) and Shape of Water (above at 2,4,5,6,9) at different positions.  Really gonna be interesting to see how this preferential ballot shakes out.

Of course, we’re just Oscar enthusiasts and not actual voters, sometimes the industry sees things differently as a whole and there are still a lot predicting that Shape is going to be near or at the top of a lot of ballots.  But it’s a really interesting picture of just how fragmented this race is and how widely opinions have varied.  I don’t think Best Picture is nearly closed yet, and I still don’t see it as two-way.
