It is usually this time of year they pick the host of the Oscars, they picked Ellen last year fairly early compared to others, so who do you think they will pick? With the same producers as the past two years, do you think they will go with Ellen again and play it safe or pick a past host or shake things up and take a risk?

It’s about a 98% certainty it will be Ellen DeGeneres again. Academy officials kept stating back in February/March that the one thing lacking in recent years was consistency and continuity. Then, lo and behold, they announced shortly after the ceremony that the same producers (Meron/Zadan) would be back for a third time next year. IMO, that means they had already decided that Ellen would be coming back as well. Great ratings and a booming social media help her cause.

The one concern might be if Ellen wants to do it again since next year the Oscars are back in February and that means the crunch time for show prep is also during the sweeps period for her talk show. Hopefully she does do it again and there are good songs nominated that can get the show off on a festive foot (a la “Happy” this year).

Ellen’s problem is she was never in it (her career) for the movies, like Billy and Whoopi.  Those two radiated such love and excitement for film, and weren’t afraid to call people out in the industry for laughs.  They were insiders and were never on the outside looking in, plus nothing they did was ever really mean spirited.  I have very fond memories of those wonderful ceremonies with Billy or Whoopi hosting and Gil Cates producing; there’s someone who knew how to pace a ceremony.  Limiting the performances to what was needed (the nominated songs only), celebrating movies in special moments like Oscar’s family album, letting the host go all out (Billy’s movies at the beginning and Whoopi’s costumes), changing up the order of the awards so that director and one of the lead categories comes earlier.  If I were advising any producer of the show, I would say look back on the old ceremonies and see what worked…and more importantly why the Oscars are important (it’s not really about who wins or the nonsense musical numbers or the stupid skits/gimmicks/and selfies; it’s about the movies and the tradition).

Ooops I doubt they go for that idea.

I agree with your sentiments. See what worked.

Could we not have these producers again? They may get ratings but the telecast is always awful.

I don’t think the Academy realizes that the ratings go up when people are interested in the movies.  It really has little to do with targeting a younger demographic or the host or the producers of the show.  These two goons make the Oscars almost as “gay” as the Tonys, no offense meant.

I think they put on a nice show compared to other years. They have learned from mistakes from past years and are open to adjust. Bill Condon did a great job for the 2009 Jackman ceremony I would love for him to do it again and Adam Shankman for the 2010 Martin/Baldwin year.

Tina has expressed her opinion of hosting the Oscars. She thinks it would be too much work for her compared to the Golden Globes but I think she could do it.

I know I’ll be fine with the ceremony if Ellen is hosting again, because the host is not that important to me, as long as it doesn’t upstage the actual ceremony. The opening monologue is the time for the host, and little bits in the ceremony should be short and sweet. I don’t want to feel like I’m wasting my time watching a guy give out pizza, or watching the host vacuum the floor. That’s what hosts like Crystal did well so consistently. It was what Gervais did with the Globes, and what Myers actually did pretty well at the Emmys this year.
My favourite is Crystal, and Jackman would be a good choice to come back too. Someone who can do a introductory musical number please!
