Last year there were only eight Oscar nominees for Best Picture. The two years before that there were nine. How many this year? Vote in the poll and then state your reasons why!

I voted 10 because it’s such a wide open year and we still don’t know exactly which direction the pendulum will swing.

However, I could see a case for a mere 6 nominees. The six that I feel having been going strong in the precursors and I think will be well supported:
    The Big Short
    Carol
    Mad Max: Fury Road
    The Revenant
    Room
    Spotlight

    I hope there is 9 or 10

17 films are in play imho

    1. “Spotlight”
    2. “Carol”
    3. “The Martian”
    4. “The Revenant”
    5. “Room”
    6. “The Big Short”
    7. “Mad Max: Fury Road”
    8. “Bridge of Spies”
    9. “Inside Out”
    10. “Brooklyn”

    11. “Straight Outta Compton”
    12. “The Hateful Eight”
    13. “Star Wars: Force Awakens”
    14. “Beasts of No Nation”
    15. “The Danish Girl”
    16. “Steve Jobs”
    17. “Trumbo”

You think top 7 is safe

Seven. It was a wide open year but that has narrowed significantly recently.

The main four that will not miss out:

    Spotlight

    Mad Max: Fury Road

    Carol

    The Revenant

    Likeliest fifth:

    The Big Short

Six and seven could go many ways, but will likely be films that bring in a lot of nominations below the line, in screenplay and with supporting frontrunners:

    Bridge of Spies

    The Hateful Eight

Eight, nine and ten only if they prove as universal as the critics groups and pundits think they are (I have my doubts because their nomination counts are going to be severely lacking):

    Brooklyn

    The Martian

    Room

7 or 8 again, many films will split votes.

I say 10 because of how many voting blocks there are inevitably going to with no real front runner this year, as there had been only a select few in every year w/ the flexible number of nominees so far.

Everything is underwhelming in some way, so I think that we have the strongest possibility in years of there only being a few nominees.  (I had to vote nine just because that is what we usually end up with.)  People always think that a divided field means that votes will be split many ways and that will result in many nominees, but it can also mean that votes are split so many ways that hardly anything is close to the threshold, so only a few things get in.  What Bradderz suggested seems very possible to me.

From what I have come to learn it is nearly impossible to have 10 in this scenario which pisses me off because every year there are more than 10 worthy nominees so there is no excuse not to fill the slots up. I think it’ll go back to 9 (hope to god)

At least seven, maybe eight, probably nine, and slightly possibly ten. There are:

Seven films that are in: Spotlight, Carol, Room, The Revenant, The Martian, The Big Short, Mad Max: Fury Road
Two films likelier to land than miss: Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn
Three films that could surprise: Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, Creed

I combine those first two groups to get nine nominees.

My hunch is that the films with the most nominations isnt going to win this year, for a change. And the ‘winner’, will receive perhaps five nominations in total: Picture, Director, Editing, Screenplay…and maybe one of the actors.

Why don’t you just say Spotlight

Lol. Because I dont want to. I’m also not convinced the film is going to win; but I’m also pretty sure that the films with the most nominations wont be winning.
