Over the weekend, Sony Pictures Classics sent out the season’s first two dvd screeners for all Oscar voters. They were:

    Miles Ahead
    Maggie’s Plan

I’m sure Don Cheadle will probably nominate himself and Ewan McGregor and the film for Best Picture on his ballot, but while the film itself is good, I don’t see it breaking through.

I haven’t seen Maggie’s Plan, but I was not impressed with Miles Ahead. Don Cheadle may get a half-hearted campaign for Actor going, but it won’t go anywhere unless the field is just incredibly weak, which is unlikely.

I really want Roadside Attractions to remind people how amazing Sally Field is in Hello, My Name Is Doris. It’s the best female lead performance so far this year.

Since Fox Searchlight currently has quite a lot on their hands right now, if I were them, I would send out the screeners to The Birth of a Nation out now, before the reviews, before any more possible fall out from Toronto, or anywhere else. Get the movie in voters’ hands now, so they can judge it as a movie, before, this mess gets even more out of control.

That’s actually an interesting idea, but I doubt they want it to leak online before release. At this point they’re probably more concerned about making their money back than campaigning, and if it leaks online after the screeners go out, it could hurt the box office even more than it already is.

The only thing even remotely I would give Maggie’s Plan is a Julianne Moore Supporting Actress nomination. It don’t look like a packed year so honestly if that happens for some reason, I wouldn’t mind

Miles Ahead would only really be worthy for Cheadle as an actor and that’s it. That movie was a mess. I actually wish they released it last year because Cheadle probably would have gotten in over Damon and we wouldn’t have had OscarSoWhite and Cheadle would have actually deserved to be there unlike some of the category’s nominees last year *cough Leo and Matt*

I Saw The Light has no chance of being nominated for anything.

Nope, but they thought it did when they signed the contract saying they had to campaign for it.

Fox Searchlight already moved on from ‘The Birth of a Nation’. They’re now spending their money on ‘JACKIE’.

To quote Anjelica Huston in The Grifters it is not.
