As you say it was pretty common for people not to go in the 70s. Some didn’t think it was what serious actors did but the other reason is that air travel wasn’t as common a thing to do so British actors rarely came unless they knew they’d win. Another factor was people couldn’t get days off to attend like they do now. If you were shooting a film or in a play and got nominated , you were just out of luck. Nowadays they’ll cancel production or in Bradley Cooper’s case close the Bway show a day early and refund all the tickets.

1981 is th worst year. Only one of the four acting winners was there.  I can’t even remember a time in recent years when an acting winner didn’t show up.

Will Smith had some problem with one of his kids. I think they had to leave to go to the hospital or something.

I think it’s interesting that four time winner Katharine Hepburn and three time winner Woody Allen were/are seemingly excused for their refusal to attend the event. They are even respected for their indifference.

We know Hepburn, at least, relished her Oscar glory. The morning after her unprecedented fourth Best Actress victory for On Golden Pond, she phoned costar and two time Best Actress winner Jane Fonda to announce, “Now you’ll never catch up to me!”

Well Henry Fonda was ill, Hepburn was Hepburn and John Gielgud – well, you can imagine. Not really that surprising. It’s also the last year that all 4 acting winners have died.

1966 was another year with only one acting winner showing up, Walter Matthau. I don’t know about any others.

According to IMDb, the most recent acting winner no-show was Paul Newman for The Color of Money. So it’s been a long time.

Barbra Streisand spent the whole 1974 Oscar ceremony in the dressing room because she didn’t want anyone to know she was there???!!!

Thats a true story….Streisand was hoping to win oscar #2 at the time
but according to sources, she was too nervous to sit in her seat…She
told the academy she was NOT attending and a seat filler was lucky
all night…If she wouldve won, she wouldve just come out from the wings
to accept…Im a Streisand fan, and I find that ridiculous…

1966  The story goes that by the time of the awards, PAUL SCOFIELD
was just about a shoo-in for  A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS over Burton
in Virginia Woolf….so the Burtons both didnt attend because Elizabeth
was angry…never mind that she was almost a shoo-in for oscar #2..
Anne Bancroft who was working with Mike Nichols at the time filming
the GRADUATE accepted Taylor’s oscar…they didnt even know each other…

Why didn’t Robert De Niro attend 1975 to accept his Oscar? And also 1977,1979,1991,1992.
Did De Niro boycott Oscar during that period?

I guess he doesn’t like attending the oscar ceremony. When he was in the ceremony in 2013 for Silver Linings Playbook, he looked like he was sleeping most of the time

Judi Dench wasn’t there last year (2014). And Heath Ledger, obviously, wasn’t either.

Anne Bancroft, Elizabeth Taylor (her 2nd), Goldie Hawn, Glenda Jackson (both times) are just some I can remember off the top of my head.

Debra Winger didn’t turn up in 1983 for her first nomination for An Officer and a Gentleman (1982).

The really weird times are in the 70s/80s when people were there BUT the TV director got them confused with other people.  If you watch 1975 and 1980 awards this happens in the 5 way split screen of the nominees.

In Best Supporting Actress 1975 instead of showing Ronee Blakely they show Susan Sarandon and in 1980 instead of showing Michael O’Keefe they show Martin Scorsesee.

In 1977 when Diane Keaton wins instead of showing Jane Fonda (whose reaction would be interesting to see since some were predicting she’d win.,,,the camera shows some guy I don’t know)

Did Jane Fonda attend 1978 Oscar when she was the favorite to win for Julia?
