It’s confirmed that Emma Thompson is not qualified for this year:

Good call. It seems they took note of the bloodbath in Best Actress is and backed away quietly.

Great move. Delighted that it’s A24 who have gone for it as well because as of now they don’t really have any films with Best Actress contenders next year which means Thompson should get a strong and focused campaign.

Maybe A24 wants to go for The Wife? 🙂

I’m seeing an early screening of The Florida project with a Q&A with Sean Baker next week and I can’t wait.

Isn’t it weird that Wonder Wheel doesn’t have a poster or even a trailer at this point in the year ? Could someone tell me if it’s normal ??

December releases which film the same year of release usually are in the midst of editing and post production work. Nothing should be available right now unless the movie was completed months earlier.

There’s a new “red band” trailer for “The Shape of Water” (only for one F word, I think) and it’s making a strong impression for Michael Shannon in the Supporting Actor race (and Octavia Spencer in Supporting Actress, to a lesser extent). I liked the first trailer but this one is making me even more excited!

There’s a scene of violence in the new trailer which clues us in on the brutality of the final film.

Hate myself for clicking the link. It spoils (almost) the entire plot! What is it with trailers nowadays. Sigh.

Kevin Spacey for Best Supporting Actor? The movie looks bad. Don’t think it will get BP or BD nominations.

I’m really hoping that Jake Gyllanhaal can get into best actor but I think there is some bias against him from the academy. I think he will need at least one critics award and some staying power from Stronger which I don’t think will happen. I wish they would have released this later in the season.

From the reviews and preview, Francis MacDormand looks like a really strong contender for Best Actress and I think the academy would have no problem giving her a second Oscar. With her union with a Coen and having the triple crown, she has that no frills artistic aura that the academy loves.

Gyllenhaal will no doubt be helped by the anemic nature of the Best Actor field. I actually have him ranked third right now.

After TIFF, these are the only contenders in my eyes as of right now. The order goes from most likely to be nominated to least likely taking reviews and/or other factors into consideration. Obviously subject to change as the season moves on.

    1. Gary Oldman
    2. Daniel Day-Lewis
    3. Timothée Chalamet
    4. Jake Gyllenhaal
    5. Tom Hanks
    —–
    6. Denzel Washington
    7. Bryan Cranston
    8. Joaquin Phoenix
    9. Hugh Jackman
    10. Matt Damon

    1. Meryl Streep
    2. Jennifer Lawrence
    3. Sally Hawkins
    4. Saoirse Ronan
    5. Kate Winslet
    —–
    6. Judi Dench
    7. Jessica Chastain
    8. Frances McDormand
    9. Annette Bening
    10. Emma Stone
