    BEST PICTURE

    The Departed (2006)

None of these are my personal choice of the year, but The Departed was my second favorite of the year.

    LEAD ACTOR

Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood) (2007)

A monumental performance if ever there was one.

    LEAD ACTRESS

    Charlize Theron (Monster) (2003)

    See reasoning for Day-Lewis.

    SUPPORTING ACTOR

Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) (2007)

    Gave me nightmares.

    SUPPORTING ACTRESS

    Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) (2007)

Fantastic understated performance from an incredibly gifted actress.

    BEST DIRECTOR

    Martin Scorsese (The Departed) (2006)

    The dude is awesome.

    ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Really tough choice, great field! But I’m a sucker for Kaufman.

    ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

    Sideways (2004)

My personal choice that year was Mean Girls, but Sideways was so fetch.

    CINEMATOGRAPHY

    Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

    No contest.

    PRODUCTION DESIGN

    Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

    No contest.

    COSTUME DESIGN

    Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)

The best part of this film.

    SOUND MIXING

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

Because I dislike the other winners.

    SOUND EDITING

    The Incredibles (2004)

Everything about this film was damn near perfect, but not as perfect as Nemo.

    FILM EDITING

    The Departed (2006)

A storyline like this requires precise and careful editing to appear competent.

    MAKEUP

    Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

    Noticing a trend?

    ORIGINAL SCORE

    Dario Marianelli (Atonement) (2007)

Because Thomas Newman didn’t win for Finding Nemo.

    VISUAL EFFECTS

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

    Fairly easy choice.

    ORIGINAL SONG

    ‘’Falling Slowly’’ (Once) (2007)

Beat “I Need to Wake Up” by a hair.

    ANIMATED FEATURE

    Finding Nemo (2003)

Everything about The Incredibles is perfect, but Nemo was the best film of the year.

    BEST PICTURE

No Country for Old Men (2007)

(Tough choice between “No Country” and “Rings” but I knew I would be rewarding “Rings” a bunch and it just has too many endings for me to choose it over “Country” which is closer to perfect. Honestly though on another day I might choose “Rings”. Today I say “No Country”.)

    LEAD ACTOR

    Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) (2005)
(I know most people will be choosing Day-Lewis and I get it. I do. Still when I first saw “There Will be Blood” I thought Day-Lewis was over the top even though I found the film a visual masterpiece. I have seen the film many times and with each time my appreciation for Day-Lewis has grown. I considered giving it to him but I thought Hoffman gave a great performance right from the first time I sawe the film and I did not even love “Capote”. So I give it to Hoffman because he was incredible and I already awarded Day-Lewis for “Lincoln”. What more does he need from me?)

    LEAD ACTRESS

Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) (2007)

    SUPPORTING ACTOR

Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) (2007)

    SUPPORTING ACTRESS

    Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton) (2007)

(The best of a weak line-up.)

    BEST DIRECTOR

Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) (2003)
(Awarding him for the entire series.)

    ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

    Lost in Translation (2003)

    ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

    Sideways (2004)
(Considered giving it to “No Country for Old Men” which has a near perfect screenplay but the screenplay is so close to the book that if you see the movie first you will just be playing the movie in your head as you read the book. All the major situations and even the dialogue is mostly the same. It is quite a book and made for a great movie. The novel SIDEWAYS is fairly weak and the film made major changes which were all for the better. If I had not read the books I would have chosen “No Country for Old Men”  but having done so “Sideways” gets my vote.)

    CINEMATOGRAPHY

    There Will Be Blood (2007)

    PRODUCTION DESIGN

    SOUND EDITING

    The Incredibles (2004)

    FILM EDITING

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

    MAKEUP

    Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)

    ORIGINAL SCORE

Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) (2003)

    VISUAL EFFECTS

    King Kong (2005)

    ORIGINAL SONG

    ‘’Falling Slowly’’ (Once) (2007)

(The easiest choice. You wanna make me start tearing up all you have to do is play this song. I am usually made of stone but this song makes me melt.)

    ANIMATED FEATURE

    The Incredibles (2004)
(Choosing between “Incredibles” and “Finding Nemo” was the hardest choice here. I love them both. “Nemo” is more moving but “Incredibles” is an action masterpiece and it was almost by just the tiniest hair my choice for the best film of its year over “Million Dollar Baby”.)
