    BEST PICTURE

    American
    Beauty (1999)

One of the best Best Picture winners of all time.

    LEAD ACTOR

    Kevin
    Spacey (American Beauty) (1999)

No-brainer. One of the best performances from one of the greatest living actors.

    LEAD ACTRESS

    Hilary
    Swank (Boys Don’t Cry) (1999)

The only one of the above that deserved it (against their competition).

    SUPPORTING ACTOR

    Chris
    Cooper (Adaptation) (2002)

Great performance from a great and reliable character actor.

    SUPPORTING ACTRESS

    Marcia Gay
    Harden (Pollock) (2000)

She is my personal winner for the year (tied with Jennifer Connelly for Requiem for a Dream)

    BEST DIRECTOR

    Sam Mendes
    (American Beauty) (1999)

Incredibly tough choice, beating out Polanski by a hair.

    ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

    American
    Beauty (1999)

The structure, plot, character work and dialogue is all phenomenal here.

    ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

    The Pianist
    (2002)

This for me always seemed to be a film that relied on its screenplay more than we may realize.

    CINEMATOGRAPHY

    American
    Beauty (1999)

Primarily for its intelligent use of color.

    PRODUCTION DESIGN

    Moulin
    Rouge (2001)

    A personal favorite of mine.

    COSTUME DESIGN

    Moulin

    The Matrix
    (1999)

    FILM EDITING

    Traffic

In this category I’m a sucker for non-linear/multiple narrative films.

    MAKEUP

    How the
    Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

    Beyond underrated film.

    ORIGINAL SCORE

    BEST PICTURE

    American Beauty (1999)

(This is a really weak line-up so it makes this choice very easy.)

    LEAD ACTOR

    Kevin Spacey (American Beauty) (1999)

    LEAD ACTRESS

Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry) (1999)

(Probably the easiest choice here. She ranks amongst the top few winners with the likes of Jane Fonda in “Klute”, Vivien Leigh in “A Streetcar Named Desire” and Olivia deHavilland in “The Heiress”.)

    SUPPORTING ACTOR
    Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) (2000)

(Tough choice between Del Toro and Chris Cooper but in 2002 my best actor choice was Dennis Quaid in “Far From Heaven” so I will go with Del Toro.)

    SUPPORTING ACTRESS

    Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago) (2002)

    Emil Petrov,

I think you should add the foreign language film category. Regular posters on this site go out of their way to see the Oscar winners so most people who give ballots will vote in that category.

    BEST PICTURE

    Shakespeare in Love (1998)

    LEAD ACTOR

    Adrien Brody (The Pianist) (2002)

A great lineup…but I just remember this film and this performance just blowing me away.

    LEAD ACTRESS

Hilary Swank (Boys Don’t Cry) (1999)

     Not even a contest.

    SUPPORTING ACTOR

    Jim Broadbent (Iris) (2001)

I’m sure I will be the only one voting for this one.  But I remember really being moved by this performance.  A close second is Del Toro and Caine.  But Broadbent really just epitomized what a great supporting performance would look like.  I”m sorry that the great Ian Mckellan still doesn’t have an Oscar, but Broadbent’s performance just had so much more to it.
