I know Joe Pesci will (deservedly) be the frontrunner to take this, but no win – aside from Ledger’s – has ever given me as much pleasure as Kline’s. It’s a performance unremitting in its absurdity (and vulgarity), yet all the richer for it. Not to mention it’s such an uncharacteristic win for the Academy, which makes it look like a happy accident. If I had 100 votes, I’d give them all to this performance.

    Picture:  Silence of the Lambs
Actor:  Al Pacino (Scent of a Woman).  Fuck you.  I love this performance.
Actress:  Kathy Bates (Misery), although either of Jodie’s would be worthy
Supporting Actor:  Denzel Washington (Glory), but any one of them would be fine
Supporting Actress:  Marisa (My Cousin Vinny) barely beats out Whoopi.  If you want your movie to win an Oscar, write a broad female comic-relief role.
Director:  Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs)
Original Screenplay:  Ghost.  When I saw it, I said “well, that should win for script, but no way the Academy’s gonna embrace something like this.”  I’ve always been proud of them for proving me wrong.  Although, all five are great.
Adapted Screenplay:  The Silence of the Lambs edges Dangerous Liaisons.  I guess I like unhealthy seduction.
Cinematography:  Mississippi Burning.  I’m from the South.  One of the few movies that got just how damned sweaty it is down here.
Art Direction:  Dick Tracy edges Batman.  Back when Oscar could appreciate a good comic book movie.
    Costumes:  Dracula
Sound:  T2, by the rule that biggest is best
Sound Editing:  The Hunt for Red October (I’m a sucker for a good sub movie)
    Editing:  JFK
    Make-Up:  Dracula!!!!!
Score:  Dances with Wolves edges out Milagro.  I never got how those Disney movies kept winning for Score.
Visual Effects:  T2.  These are 5 great winners, but T2 was one of the last movies where we watched the movie and had no idea how they did that.
Song:  “Beauty and the Beast” (Beauty and the Beast) should hae lost to Bryan Adams for ROBIN HOOD, but it’s still pretty good
