There are only 11 actresses of Academy Awards history who were nominated three of more times and still didn’t win the Oscar.

    They were (@made a pic):

    Thelma Ritter – 6 nominations

    Deborah Kerr – 6 nominations

    Irene Dunne – 5 nominations

    Barbara Stanwyck – 4 nominations
    Rosalind Russell – 4 nominations
    Agnes Moorehead – 4 nominations
    Greta Garbo – 4 nominations

    Natalie Wood – 3 nominations
    Edith Evans – 3 nominations
    Gloria Swanson – 3 nominations
    Gladys Cooper – 3 nominations

I wonder who’ll join for their sad victory? Or who’ll escape from it?

There are 16 actresses right now with multiple Academy-Award nominations, who’ll be lucky enough to get an Oscar, who won’t be able to do that?

    Discuss.

    Glenn Close – 6 nominations

    Julianne Moore – 4 nominations
    Amy Adams – 4 nominations
    Jane Alexander – 4 nominations
    Marsha Mason – 4 nominations
    Annette Bening – 4 nominations

    Debra Winger – 3 nominations
    Michelle Williams – 3 nominations
    Joan Allen – 3 nominations
    Sigourney Weaver – 3 nominations
    Michelle Pfeiffer – 3 nominations
    Piper Laurie – 3 nominations
    Laura Linney – 3 nominations
    Eleanor Parker – 3 nominations
    Angela Lansbury – 3 nominations
    Diane Ladd – 3 nominations

Also, Naomi Watts can join for the list this year if she’ll get a nomination for “Diana”.

Kerr’s dead so I’ll remain annoyed that she didn’t win a competitive Oscar on her behalf.

Williams is the youngest actress on that list – she seems the most likely (if she gets a supporting nomination before she wins in lead, she’d probably win easily). Bening’s also a supporting nomination away from a probable win. Joan Allen’s an excellent actress so I could see her win some day, and Close is also likely.

The word in the title thread should be “loser” not “looser.”

What is a looser? Sounds like someone who is incontinent.

“She’s certainly looser than her.” Looser, as in ‘sexually free/promiscuous?’

makes sense, but not a noun as used in the headline

maybe the thread suggests actress nonwinners are punished for their alleged sexual “looseness”

Let’s talk about the actresses not about that I made a mistake at the title.

Hmmmm, always thought Glenn Close’s Fatal Attraction character permanently put her off to male voters.

Thx for changing the headline – I was beginning to wonder too much about Thelma Ritter’s personal life.

Adams and Bening eventually will win.

Chastain is in danger of joining this club from the urgency the Academy felt to award 22 year old Lawrence over her for Best Actress.

I watched The Silence of the Lambs this last week (first time watching it since I was maybe 10), and Foster’s role was kind of the one most tried to equate to Chastain’s. There are certainly parallels but with Foster being in a smash hit, a big Oscar player, and her character having really memorable dramatic scenes (the lambs monologue and the scene with Bill). Chastain was, unfortunately, screwed over with the ZDT controversy and snubs.

Moreover, Foster as Clarice Starling is one of my favorite winning performances of all time (and it’s probably not even the fifth best Demme movie).

I think Adams will win this year for Abscam. Watts should also be strong contender this year.

This is Adams in character on the set for Abscam (or whatever the hell it’s called):

So she may not win, but she can at least look great along the way.

She will not win because she looks like that?
