There are only two more weeks until the Academy Awards way in with their wins. And I can’t help but think of last year when Production Design went to Lincoln, surprisingly. Is there any contender for any category this year that could pull a surprise win like Lincoln did?

Some of the choices I have are:

    • Steve McQueen, Best Director
    • Leo DiCaprio, Best Actor
    • The Wolf of Wall Street, Adapted Screenplay
    • Her, Original Score
    • “Ordinary Love”, Original Song
    • Bad Grandpa, Makeup (this one is a stretch)
    • Her, Production Design
    • American Hustle, Costume Design

I don’t know if this is entirely out of the box, but I’m betting on Chiwetel Ejiofor for Best Actor. I know there’s a lot in McConaughey’s favor right now but with so many strong performances in that category, I don’t think he’s as undeniable as everyone thinks he is. I think Ejiofor has a lot of respect in the industry, and now with the BAFTA win he’s shown that he can at least beat DiCaprio and Dern (and Bale, but he never had a shot). His performance is very showy, even more so than McConaughey, and I have a gut feeling that he’ll get enough votes to send him over the top. I’m fully prepared to be wrong though, but I’m predicting at least one unexpected acting win in this crazy season!

^ I’m glad to see someone else who hasn’t entirely given up on Ejiofor. People keep saying how it’s too much of a restrained performance to win over contenders like McConaughey and DiCaprio, but actually this is the kind of work Oscar likes to reward – he has several highly emotional scenes, and the performance has enough gravitas that would make him a slam-dunk in another year. (I’m convinced he would’ve won over Jean Dujardin, for instance.) I’ve still got McConaughey in no. 1, but he’s vulnerable.

I don’t see how all of Tyler’s predicted upsets above could occur, but I tentatively have Her in the top spot for Production Design (I think it’s far more likely to upset than Gravity, that’s for sure), and I wouldn’t be shocked by a Costume win for American Hustle.
