I think one of the most incredible Academy Award achievements is to win Best Actor/Actress and Best Supporting Actor/Actress. So I wanted to make a complete list of the people who have managed to do this

    • Kevin Spacey (L:American Beauty and S:The Usual Suspects)
    • Jack Nicholson (L: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest/As Good As It Gets and S: Terms of Endearment)
    • Denzel Washington (L: Training Day and S: Glory)
    • Meryl Streep (L: Sophie’s Choice/The Iron Lady and S: Kramer vs. Kramer)
    • Jack Lemmon (L: Save the Tiger and S: Mister Roberts)
    • Gene Hackman (L: The French Connection and S: Unforgiven)
    • Maggie Smith (L: The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and S: California Suite)
    • Jessica Lange (L: Blue Sky and S: Tootsie)
    • Robert De Niro (L: Raging Bull and S: The Godfather Part II)
    • Ingrid Bergman (L: Gaslight/Anastasia and S: Murder on the Orient Express)
    • Helen Hayes (L: The Sin of Madelon Claudet and S: Airport)

Please let me know if I left any out

However, the point of this thread is to get opinions on which actors could achieve this in the future, and what role they should take to win it. Please post who you think will win Lead and Supporting in the future and what type of role they will achieve it with (note: they have to have won one of the two already)

I personally think Phillip Seymour Hoffman will win Supporting with The Master. He seems like someone who the Academy has been waiting to award again (how else do you explain the nominations for Doubt and Charlie Wilson’s War coming so soon? He is an excellent actor though)

It is only a matter of time before Christian Bale wins Leading Actor. Possibly with a biopic of some sort? Maybe he could play an ex-president and win Best Actor with that?

As long as she keeps up her excellent supporting work, Frances McDormand will definately see the Oscar podium again. Maybe she could do it with another Wes Anderson film?

    Opinions?

Phiip Seymour Hoffman is gettng a lot of nominations in the supporting category lately, but I don’t what it would take for him to win. I think he would have to stretch himself as much as he did in ‘Capote’ to gain the buzz necessary for a second statue.

I’d say he already has the makings of huge ‘buzz’, but his main plus imo is in being in a PTA film. This guy ‘allows’ his actors to do their own thing, and it has reaped many benefits for the film and for the performers.

I totally agree with you! Tom Cruise was most likely second in 1999 for Magnolia. He would have easily won if Michael Caine hadn’t stolen the other awards that could have led to Cruise’s win. I think Hoffman is beloved in the Academy. He is an excellent actor and he will definately win another Academy Award within the next 10 years, but its most likely going to be for this PT Anderson film.
