I participate in a meme called Five on Friday.  For the past three weeks and for the next couple of weeks, it features the songs of Oscar and Golden Globes.  If anyone would like to check in to put in their two cents worth:  http://jamiesplace.wordpress.com/

Suddenly is a beautiful song that actually provides a very necessary plot point in Les Miserables.  Skyfall will probably win since it is a major hit and Adele, but Suddenly actually comes closest to the intention of the Academy rules about “best song”.

I agree. It’s a beautifully written song that has been used very effectively to continue the plot. I’m guilty of labelling that song as just a reason for the makers to win an Oscar, but I was wrong, and it is the best thing I liked in Les Mis. I prefer it much more than Skyfall.

This is what bothers me about the category. They shoudl retitle it Best Integration of an Original Song into a Film. Then I would completely alter my pesonal rankings. But I look at it as, simply, the all-around best song, which happened to have been made for a film. Going by this, there’s no universe where “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” is a better song than “In the Deep” and most especially “Travelin’ Thru.” But, its genius integration into Hustle and Flow is undeniable.

Good point re “Suddenly.” If it’s the best original song, then Adele’s “Skyfall” takes it in a cakewalk. If it’s best integration of an original song into a film, then “Skyfall” gets trampled on by “Suddenly” from Les Miserables

In that case, songs written for musicals would trample almost every other kind of movie songwriting.  Also, a “Best Integration of an Original Song” award should rightly go to the director, not to the songwriter, since the director would be the one responsible for fitting the song into the flow of the movie.  And that’s sort of silly, no?

Yes. You just proved my point exactly. It is silly. But this seems to be the logic when it comes to the way members are supposed to vote on this category.
