Best Picture: Arrival, Deadpool, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water,Hidden Figures, La la Land, Lion, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight
Biggest surprise is Deadpool. Biggest omissions are Jackie, Nocturnal Animals and Silence.
I had high expectations for Jackie that simply were not met. My problem with the movie is that it is mostly surfaces and lacks depth. I wasn’t impressed with Portman’s performance; I found it strained and she tries too hard. I like her as an actress but was disappointed by her work in this film. I know others love it. I do think Jackie is running out of steam.
Silence is mostly great and I regard it as one of Scorsese’s masterpieces. A bit austere I suppose; it’s art rather than ‘feel good” material. We no longer have great film critics and now critics are hired who will toe the line – journalism is no longer about quality but about obedience to the corporate state. Even when I disagreed with critics in the past their passion was evident. Now everything is about feeling good and not making waves ):
Deadpool is the only one of these ten films I haven’t seen.
la la land is going to win.
My personal rankings of the 9 I have seen;
1. Manchester by the Sea
3. La La land
4. Hacksaw Ridge
6. Hidden Figures
7. Hell or High Water
Best Animated Film: Finding Dory, Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, The Secret Life of Pets and Zootopia (The Secret Life Of Pets is the only surpirse here)
Best Documentary: Dancer, The Eagle Huntress, Life, Animated, O.J.: Made In America, and Tower
Deadpool is nominated? if it gets an oscar best picture nod, that will be the first… But hey the reason they increased the best pic category from 5 to 10 is so movies like deadpool get nominated i guess, since the dark knight failed
