Tom Hanks was able to win back-to-back Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscars. One for Philadelphia and the other one for Forrest Gump, both of them extraordinary performances. This is something that I’ve ALWAYS wanted to talk about with someone but sadly I’ve need been surrounded by people remotely passionate about cinema. I’m glad I now have you guys!

Which one of these two performances you think is the most powerful one? Do you think that Tom Hanks was deserving of both wins or was he worthier in other movies such as Cast Away?

Forrest Gump. Not even close. Though I felt his best performance was in the Toy Story series, Forrest Gump is just so damn good! Screw Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump was the Best Picture of 1994.

Forrest Gump- a defining performance in all aspects.

He was great in Philadelphia, but I felt he was overshadowed by Denzel Washington in the final courtroom scenes, where it is Washington’s character who has to drive the story home.

I prefer his work in Big, Cast Away and Splash. Out of the two I’d go with Forrest Gump.

Forrest Gump is one of the worst films ever made. I have had to sit through it numerous times in history classes, movie nights with friends and other occasions and it’s just so damn bad, and it gets worse every time. Hanks is laughably awful in the uber-one dimensional leading role and doesn’t make anything about the character interesting, compelling, unique, dimensional or worth making a movie about. I do like most of the supporting cast (particularly Sally Field) but there is little to nothing else redeemable about that horrid excuse for a film.

It’s insulting to even try to compare it to Philadelphia, a film I like a lot and think Hanks is terrific in though Denzel Washington is the better of the two leads.

Personally I don’t think Hanks has ever deserved an Oscar, but the closest he came for me was Big, which showed him in his natural element (comedy). Many don’t remember that he was a small-time comic actor for a short period of time before trying (and failing for the most part imo) to be a dramatic actor.

I think Tom Hanks also deserved a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nod for his fantasitc comic performance in A League of Their Own (1992)- pure genius!

i also never liked Forest Gump, at all.  i thought it was horrible and still do.

Philadelphia is a much better film and I have watched it many times.  Its one of my favorite Tom Hanks movies.

I also really like Money Pit (im probably alone here).

Forrest Gump definitely. I don’t get the hate towards it. Granted I haven’t seen the movie in a looong time so don’t know how it holds up now, but I remember being awed by everything when watching it.

Philadelphia as a film was much more powerful, but based on Tom Hanks’ performance, I have to go with Forrest Gump

Given the way some people mocked the film (which says a lot about those assholes), I remember expecting to loathe Forrest Gump, but I was unexpectedly moved.

I also like Philadelphia a lot; it is another deeply moving film.

Tom Hanks was excellent in both films and I am so glad he won Oscars for them.

    So my answer is: BOTH.

Ding, ding, ding! The Hyperbole Train has arrived at the station. Please present your out-of-touch-with-reality card at the gate if you wish to board.
