Let’s start with a big one: until last night, four films were tied for most Oscar nominations without winning Best Picture (MARY POPPINS, VIRGINIA WOOLF, LOTR:FOTR, BENJAMIN BUTTON), at 13.  LA LA LAND has now set a new, likely unbeatable record.

Casey and Ben Affleck are only the 3rd set of siblings where one won an acting Oscar and the other a non-acting Oscar.  The others are Douglas & Norma Shearer, and Shirley MacLaine & Warren Beatty (both of whom were there last night).

Viola Davis, Idris Elba, and JK Simmons each had two different films that won Oscars last night.

Batman films have now won 4 Oscars, and the 9th film in the Harry Potter-verse finally earns the franchise its first award.

This was the 3rd THE JUNGLE BOOK to be nominated for an Oscar but the first to win something.  And this was the second time a film called SING was up for an Oscar (the 2001 doc short had an “!”) and also the first to win.

First time since 1998 (1997 films) where all four acting winners portrayed fictional characters.

Moonlight is the lowest-budgeted film ever to win Best Picture, adjusted for inflation.

Second year in a row that the Best Picture winner lost PGA, DGA and BAFTA for Best Film, and has a title that ends with ‘light’!

Last night was only the fourth time that 3 different Best Director nominees (Chazelle, Lonergan, Jenkins) all won Oscars the same night of their nomination.

    The other years were

    2005 (Lee, Haggis, Clooney)

    2011 (Hazanavicius, Allen, Payne)

    2015 (Inarritu, McCarthy, McCay)
