Which foreign language film can pull off a suprise nomination this year, outside of Best Foreign Language Film?

I feel like there will be a suprise nomination or two for foreign language films come nomination morning. Every year, there seem to be nominations for foreign language films in categories other than Best Foreign film, but I don’t know what and where it’ll be this year. Last year I didn’t think any foreign language film was going to be nominated outside foreign film, but then The Grandmaster surprised with a Cinematography and Costume Design nominations. Right now the only nomination I see as a possibility is Marion Cotillard for Two Days, One Night. I also think Adapted Screenplay is another place that could hold a surprise, but I’m not sure which foreign films are adapted (if any).

I think some Foreign Language Films such as Force Majeure, Ida and Leviathan may pop up in the Original Screenplay category (if they are original screenplays, that is). Right now, Boyhood, Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel are what I consider locks in Original Screenplay, but the other two slots are pretty much up for grabs.

Marion Cotillard is certainly an educated guess, and I had actually predicted that before the news that Two Days, One Day didn’t get in the Foreign Language Film shortlist. But now…well, it’s less likely, I guess.

Last year I didn’t find The Grandmaster to be particularly suprising in the Cinematography category as that was cited by the ASC I remember. Also, that film had very showy cinematographic techniques and perhaps I kind of wished it would get nominated for something since I’m from Hong Kong lol. I actually think the real surprise regarding the film came in the form of a snub in the Foreign Language Film category. It was the only film in the Foreign Language Film category to get more than one nomination, showing its much wider support, and yet it missed as a Foreign Language Film nominee.

I think it would be pretty difficult for them, though. It feels like Original Screenplay is packed with contenders. If Selma picks up a lot of heat for the rest of the season, I imagine it would be a natural fit for its writing, and Whiplash could have a lot of passionate support to push it forward. Plus, Mike Leigh is very well-liked by the Writers’ branch, pulling off nominations for 4 of his last 5 films.

I think Ida stands a good chance for its wonderful cinematography (much like The White Ribbon in 2009). Mikhail Krichman’s astonishing widescreen compositions in Leviathan are just as deserving, in my opinion, but far less likely to be nominated.

Troye – I don’t think Two Days One Night’s failure to make the shortlist necessarily hurts Cotillard’s chances, as her votes will come exclusively from the actors’ branch whereas those voting for the foreign films were from a range of different branches. Quite a few foreign acting nominees have been for films not nominated in the Foreign Language category (including Cotillard herself for La Vie en Rose, although that one wasn’t submitted by France).

Ida could get into cinematography which I have it in. Black and white films have been doing good lately. The white Ribbon, The Artist, Nebraksa why not Ida. Not to mention foreign film Grandmaster got in last year. People reading this should put Ida in their predix. I think it’ll be worth it.

Ida in Cinematography is actually a really good point. Cinematography seems to be a category where Foreign Films can often pop up.

Since all voters have to do is list the film and not the name, I can even see Ida going so far as to get a Best Director nomination. I’m pretty sure its cinematography will be recognized, regardless.

I think it does hurt Marion for her film not to make the shortlist in that it ensures less resources being focused on her film in general, and her distributor was never that strong to begin with. BAFTA can still rescue her, though.

Those are probably the best bets. Maybe one of the Saint Laurent biopics can get in for Costumes or something.

You might be right about Marion, ibbster, but tbh I never thought she had a great chance in the first place. I meant more that the ‘snub’ for her film doesn’t really affect her one way or the other, but perhaps it does. I expect she can get a BAFTA nom, but she’s just the type they’d nominate anyway so it might not be much help (and won’t Oscar voting have already closed when BAFTA noms are announced?)

I’m glad you mentioned Ida for best director, as I’m having trouble with that category – there’s Linklater, Iñárritu, DuVernay (not a lock), and the other two slots are kind of up for grabs, though I think Wes Anderson has a real shot this time. That leaves a crapshoot between people like Tyldum, Miller, Fincher, Chazelle and Leigh, all of whom have disadvantages. Perhaps Pawlikowski can crash in.

When I said BAFTA can save Marion, I mean in the sense that it could indicate that the 800 or so overlapping voters with the Academy (mostly in the acting branch) might have given her enough support to squeeze her in.
