I’ve noticed that lots of people have general questions about the industry, awards etc, but they are worth making a whole thread (perhaps a thread category for this could be created in the future). I know I have a lot of questions about small details, so I thought I’d create a thread where we can ask questions and those who can answer will hopefully share their knowledge

    Here are my questions:

    1. At the SAG Awards, when a film or TV series wins Best Ensemble, do each of the nominated actors get a trophy or are they just given one as a group? If they are only given one trophy as a group, who keeps it?
    2. When a film wins Best Animated Feature, who keeps the Academy Award trophy? I know the director accepts it, but does he keep it?

At the SAG awards: An actor must have been specifically submitted previous to the nominations. It is NOT the entire cast. At one time, they had to have been listed individually in the credits, but due to discrepency that rule changed (I believe people were left off from Desperate Housewives).

The Director accepts (and keeps) the award for both Foreign Language Film, and Animated Feature.

But for example, with Silver Linings Playbook this year, it was Cooper, Lawrence, Weaver, DeNiro, Anupam Kher and Chris Tucker were all nominated under Film Ensemble, whereas two of the other actors – Julia Stiles and John Ortiz (who had substantial roles) were not nominated. Now if Silver Linings Playbook had won, would Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jacki Weaver, Robert DeNiro, Anupam Kher and Chris Tucker all have received individual trophies?

Yes, only Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jacki Weaver, Robert DeNiro, Anupam Kher and Chris Tucker would have recieved the statue. ALL the other listed cast members of SLP, including Julia Stiles and John Ortiz, would have gotten a certificate.

In order to get the SAG statue, an actor HAS to be credited in individual title frames in the opening/ending credits. But I’m not totally sure if this rule applies to television, as I read that when Downton Abbey won the SAG, 22 of its actors won the statuette. But in the opening credits of the show, all their names are listed alphabetically with no special billing to any of the cast members.

My question- In the Best Song category, do they give two seperate Oscars for the music composer and the lyricist?
For example, if Skyfall song had been written by Adele and Paul Epworth, but say the music was composed only by Paul Epworth. Let’s say it wins, does it mean Epworth gets two Oscars, and Adele one?

    Question about the FORUM:

Why do we have just 10 options in a poll? We need more, specially at this time of the year when we have lots of contenders in every category.

    They each get one.
My question is, does Dame Emmanuelle Riva speak English? I always wanted to hear how she speaks, and I’m just curious cause what will happen if she wins Best Actress?

I wish AMPAS did this for the short subject awards & documentary feature as well 🙁

Here’s mine: For the Academy Awards, in the final voting, is every category voted on a preferential basis, or just Best Picture?

I think there should be preferential voting in all categories.

To give a specific example – among the best actress contenders, for me only Riva or Chastain would be deserving winners. If I were a voter, I’d likely go whichever one seemed to have the better chance of voting. But in doing so, I’d have to guess which one that is. If there were preferential, I could just vote them 1/2 and not have to make that choice.

Who wins is often a factor of what else is nominated. For example, in Documentary this year, Searching for Sugar Man is likely to win by default, because it is the only one with a conventional story and heart-tugging details. It’s a good film, but I don’t think the best of the films. But because the other four are quite similar, serious themed films, they likely split the vote, allowing the most conventional to win easily since no other entry is similar to it. To stick with the Doc category, same thing with Undefeated last year.

A compromise might be that any nominee it is gets 40% of the votes and is the highest wins, but only those under 40% would then have preferential factor in (I’m talking about all categories, not just Doc).

Shorts have a maximum of two nominees attached from those listed as producer. Almost always the director makes sure from the start s/he is listed as one of them

Why do we care about awards? It’s not like we get them. 😉
