Andrzej Wajda, one of the most influential Polish directors, has passed away yesterday. He was 90. He directed more amazing films than I’m able to count. 4 of them were nominated for Oscar in Best Foreign Language Film – masterpiece “The Promised Land”, voted recently as Best Polish Film, poetic “The Maids of Wilko”, Palme D’Or-winning politic statement “Man of Iron” (sequel to even better “Man of Marble”) and recently “Katyń” which immortalized traumatic episode of Polish history during World War II.
Among the other most important titles I’d include “Ashes and Diamonds”, “Landscape After Battle”, “The Marble”, “The Wedding” and “Danton”. 1970s was the decade of his peak.
His newest and (as it turned out) final film “Afterimage” is submitted in the current race. Wajda received Honorary Oscar in 2000, presented to him on the ceremony by Jane Fonda.
He will be sorely missed. Did you see any of his movies? Which ones are your favorites?
