You love her – because who doesn’t love Meryl Streep? You hate her – because sometimes you are tired of her being nominated every year. But no matter that you love or hate her – there is one true thing – she’s a legend and one of the greatest actresses of all time.

Rank the performances (not just Oscar-nominee performances) you’ve seen by her and discuss about your choices.

    That’s all.

I swear this thread is already around here somewhere. But I wonder how many people here will put on their lists films like Julia, Joe Tynan, Manhattan, French Lieutenant’s Woman, Silkwood, Deer Hunter, Plenty, Ironweed, Out of Africa. You know, the old ones and not fanboy-friendly films. There are plenty of Oscar nominated performances there to choose from and she could’ve been nominated for others but they came out the same year as her actual nominated roles.

Also, “Forgettable Performances” doesn’t mean Doubt. It means Prime, Unfortunate Events, Rendition, Dancing at Lughnasa or whatever that film was called and even The Giver. You know, films people…forget…about…Everybody remembers Doubt, knows about it and everybody here will talk about it every chance they get. Just list it under “Bad Performances”, don’t be afraid.

I’ll admit I am slacking on some of her past performances so here are the ones I have seen

    1. Doubt- Amazing. Absolutely amazing. Kate Winslet stole her oscar.
    2. August: Osage County- I know people are mixed about her here but she blew me away
    3. The Iron Lady
    4. Julie and Julia
    5. The Devil Wears Prada
    6. Silkwood
    7. A Series of Unfortunate Events
    8. Fantastic Mr. Fox
    9. Lion for Lambs
    10. Mamma Mia
    11. It’s Complicated
    12. Adaptation
    13. Kramer vs Kramer
    14. The Hours
    15. The Giver
    16. The Deer Hunter
    17. Juia
    18. Out of Africa

Honerable Mention for TV: Web Therapy

I think that is it. I know I know, Sophie’s Choice. It will happen some day

    The Best Top 5:

    1. Sophie’s Choice
    2. A Cry in the Dark
    3. Adaptation/Angels in America
    4. Silkwood
    5. Bridges of Madison County

I’m perfectly fine with The Iron Lady winning for several personal reasons and I just ADORE her in The Devil wears Prada.

Doubt, August:Osage County and The Hours are great ensemble films.

    The Favorite Top 5:

    1. Death becomes Her/She-Devil
    2. Mamma Mia! (I love love LOVE it!)
    3. Heartburn
    4. A Prairie Home Companion
    5. The River Wild

    The Underrated Top 5:

    1. The Manchurian Candidate (yes, I know Angela Lansbury is untouchable, but I just love how creepy she is there)
    2. Lions for Lambs
    3. Lemony Snicket
    4. Prime (eh to me, she was really funny)
    5. Falling in Love/It’s Complicated

My personal list. There’s not a single role I hate, though the most “awkward” film is Dark Matter. I don’t know why she did it…. but whatever.

Anyone ever see The Holocaust miniseries?  I’m interested in that one, since I’ve never seen it and have no idea what the story is about.

Meryl is everything in ONE TRUE THING.  There’s one that’s not very popular in these parts.  The movie isn’t completely successful, but she’s absolutely wonderful playing a mother.  I really felt how essential she was to that family…she’s perfect in the beginning scenes as the person who goes out of her way for everyone and is so boyant with her grace and sincerity.  And then, when she gets sick, those final scenes are devastating.  It was crushing for me to watch.

I’d love it if someone could write up why Meryl is so great in CRY IN THE DARK.  I should probably revisit the film; I remember being underwhelmed by the storytelling and filmmaking.  Just curious how the performance goes beyond what we might normally expect from her, especially in her makeup and accents 80s era.

    My list would include:
A.I. — if you ever want to feel the power of Meryl’s voice alone, watch this film.  If anyone ever nailed a <5 min vocal performance it’s her.
    Adaptation
    Death Becomes Her
    The Deer Hunter
    Devil Wears Prada
    The Hours
    Kramer vs. Kramer
    One True Thing
    Out of Africa
    Silkwood
    Sophie’s Choice

and probably Cry in the Dark, but again, I need to revisit it.

I’m not a fan of IRON LADY.  I think they completely butchered what could have been an incredibly compelling life story.  Meryl’s performance suffers from the editing and stop-and-go pacing…there’s little coherency and no arc at all.  Just old Maggie and PM Maggie.  It’s a bummer, because Thatcher deserved much better, whether you liked her or hated her.  I feel like I don’t understand her any better as a person or a leader from watching that film.
