I can’t properly rank all of them. I’ve seen five of the seven — the last four plus “Glory,” and I saw that too long ago to remember very well. But how would you rank the Oscar nominated performances by Denzel Washington? Which is your favorite and why? Of these last four I’d say “Fences” is definitely tops for me.

The Hurricane (so underrated and it felt the most realistic out of the bunch. I felt every emotion for him. Should’ve been his third win.)

Malcolm X (an iconic performance that should’ve won him that Oscar)

    Glory- So damn good.

Fences- This left me more impressed than I thought it was going to. Rooting for his win here.

    Cry Freedom- Same thing.

Flight- It’s a decent performance. He plays drunk and disoriented really well but its not among his best.

Training Day- He’s good here but definitely not deserving of a win. He could’ve done this in his sleep. Wouldn’t even give him a nom.

So yeah, Training Day and maybe Flight were his only questionable nominations.

    1. Malcolm X (dead-on brilliant)
    2. Cry Freedom (stole the film)
    3. The Hurricane (terrific performance in a stunningly anemic film)
    4. Fences (memorable but more appropriate for the stage)
    5. Flight (decent)
    6. Glory (a couple of scenes aside, not terribly noteworthy)
    7. Training Day (meh)

    1) Malcolm x
    2) Training Day
    3) Glory
    4) Cry Freedom
    5) The Hurricane
    6) Fences
    7) Flight

I wouldn’t have nominated him for the bottom three films. The sappiness/phoniness of “The Hurricane” seeped into his performance for that film. His work in “Fences” was more appropriate for a very large playhouse on Broadway rather than a movie theatre. “Flight” seemed to me like a collection of Denzel Washington’s acting tics and tricks to the point where I believe Jay Pharoah could have done pretty much the same thing.
