    Two rules:
    1. You cannot include a performance or film that is not nominated (sorry Joaquin).
    2. You cannot rank a film or performance you have not seen. Please make it clear if you have not seen something in question.

An asterisk denotes who I think will win at this point in time. The personal rankings are mostly static, though.

I’ll complete mine as well. Those that I don’t list are the ones I haven’t seen. For the songs, I’m just going to listen to them on youtube (which is obviously different than the context they’re presented to in the film)

I haven’t seen many of the shorts, but I did watch Requiem for Romance (animated) and thought it was brilliant! I actually prefer it to every nominated short last year, except for the gimmicky upside-down one; that one was cute.

    Anyways…

    Foreign Language:
    1. The Hunt
    2. The Great Beauty

    Animated:
    1. Frozen
    2. The Croods
    3. Despicable Me 2 (I disliked this, so the other two will probably be ranked above it once I get around to them).

    Documentary:
    1. The Act of Killing
    2. The Square
    3. Cutie and the Boxer
    4. Dirty Wars
    5. 20 Feet from Stardom

    Cinematography:
    1. Gravity
    2. Inside Llewyn Davis
    3. Nebraska
    4. Prisoners

    Costume Design:
    1. The Great Gatsby
    2. American Hustle
    3. 12 Years a Slave

    Editing:
    1. Gravity*
    2. 12 Years a Slave
    3. Captain Phillips
    4. American Hustle
    5. Dallas Buyers Club

    Where the hell is Wolf?!?!

    Makeup:
    1. Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa
    2. The Lone Ranger
    3. Dallas Buyers Club

    Production Design:
    1. Gravity*
    2. Her
    3. The Great Gatsby
    4. 12 Years a Slave
    5. American Hustle

    Best Score:
    1. Her
    2. Gravity*
    3. Philomena
    4. Saving Mr. Banks

    **Best Song:
    1.

    Best Sound Editing:
    1. Lone Survivor
    2. Gravity*
    3. All Is Lost
    4. Captain Phillips
    5. The Hobbit

    Best Sound Mixing:
    1. Gravity*
    2. Inside Llewyn Davis
    3. Lone Survivor
    4. The Hobbit
    5. Lone Survivor

    Visual Effects:
    1. Gravity*
    2. The Lone Ranger
    3. The Hobbit
    4. Iron Man 3
    5. Star Trek

I don’t have enough information about the shorts… I will reserve this post and update it when I have seen the other nominees (the shorts eventually play in a theater in Toronto!).

I have compiled a list of my personal rankings of the BP nominees from 2000 onward. For those who said this was a great year for movies, I believe you’re right.

With the nine nominees in 2013, there have been 92 BP nominees since 2000:

7.6% (7) have garnered a 5-star rating from me. They are (in chronological order): Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Lord of the Rings: Returh of the King, There Will be Blood, Toy Story 3, The Social Network, Silver Linings Playbook, and Her.

9.6% (9) have garnered less than a 3-star rating. They are (in chronological order): Erin Brockovich, Gosford Park, Moulin Rouge, Finding Neverland, Precious, The Blind Side, An Education, Winter’s Bone, and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.

The year 2013 would rank 6th after 2012 (from 2000-onward, so 14 years are eligible). The first number is simply an average of the film ratings, while the second one is more important as I took out the lowest film as a measure against outliers.

    BEST BP NOMINEE LIST:

    1.
2006 (The Departed, Letters From Iwo Jima,
Little Miss Sunshine, Babel, The Queen) 4.3, 4.56

    2.    2003 (The Lord of The Rings: Return of The King,
Lost In Translation, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Mystic
    River, Seabiscuit) 4.3, 4.5
    4.     2010 (The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, 127 Hours, Black Swan, Inception, The Fighter, The Kids Are All Right, True Grit, Winter’s Bone) 4.125, 4.36     ***I’m ranking this above 2007 because it is ridiculously close and has double the nominees***
    4.     2007 (No Country For Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Juno, Atonement, Michael Clayton) 4.25, 4.375

    5.     2012 (Argo, Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild,
Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook,
    Zero Dark Thirty) 4.17, 4.28

    6.     2013 (American Hustle, Gravity, Dallas Buyers Club, Nebraska, Her, Philomena, Captain Phillips, 12 Years a Slave, The Wolf of Wall Street)  4.1111, 4.19

For the record, my ratings for the films are:
    Her (5)
The Wolf of Wall Street (4.75)
     12 Years a Slave (4.5)
    Gravity (4.25)
    Philomena (4)
    American Hustle (3.75)
    Captain Phillips (3.75)
    Dallas Buyers Club (3.5)
    Nebraska (3.5)

Anything at a 4 or above I would easily recommend. 3.75 is like a B+. So the year places 6th out of 14, but I think 2012 may have been slightly better. 2010, with Winter’s Bone as an outlier, is the strongest of an expanded field.

What this year does have, as oppose to most, are no bad nominees. If Saving Mr. Banks or The Butler were to have made it in, the lineup would have been much worse. Plus, only the 7th 5-star in 14 years. So, I think if you take both of those into account, the year may be as high as 4th out of 14.
