Imagine a world where Meryl Streep didn’t exist. Who would you have cast in her roles and why?

I know people here (espeically the snobs) like to say that Meryl doesn’t have a “memorable” performance under her belt (which is absolutely not true), but I cannot imagine anyone else but her playing the roles that she played. Like everytime I imagine Helen Mirren playng Miranda Preistly, I always come back to the image of Meryl’s Miranda Priestly.

I’m sure, if I put the time and energy into thinking about it, I could come up with valid replacements for Streep’s roles… EXCEPT Miranda Priestly.  I honestly don’t think anyone could have pulled that role off half as well as she did.

Anyone could play all her roles as good as her or even better. No one, absolutely no one is irreplaceable.

    I’d rather replace her directors.

Almost always a film actor’s performance is only as good as the director, who contributes 50% or more to the quality of the performance.

Replacing her with other actresses would mean nothing without improving the directors in the cases of many of her films.

And you’re very mature. I’ve already reported your post. I’m not gonna tolerate this kind of behavior.

    This.

Meryl has a terrible taste for directors.

And sometimes she is the one who decides the director.

People like Ryan Gosling, Nicole Kidman or Julianne Moore CHOOSE DIRECTORS. So Meryl, 3 Oscar Winner, definitely can do it too.

But, she is in real life a lazy lady who does not want to produce movies or search for innovative filmmakers. She plays comfortable. That does not mean she has a wrong attitude, just that she does not spend time in doing her work. And that, sometimes, is a mistake. Am I right Phyllida Lloyd? Sometimes it’s not a mistake, like Nora Ephron.

It’s pretty silly to say Streep is irreplaceable in all of her roles, but I think you can say she rose the bar for a good handful of her performances. For instance I don’t think Devil Wears Prada would’ve recieved the acclaim/awards recognition it did without Streep, and I can imagine The Iron Lady would’ve been a direct to DVD film had any other actor did Thatcher.

I think Susan Sarandon would be good in many of these roles; especially “One True Thing” and some of Meryl’s 90’s films.

Well Jessica Lange, Sally Field, Bette Midler, Sissy Spacek, Judy Davis, Dianne Keaton were very unfortunated to share generation with Meryl. Most of them could have done a great performance in many of her films.
From all the roles from which she was nominated, the only one i cant picture any other actress is the one about fhe False Australian Murderer. She is just amazing there.
