If you could recast 3 characters played by Carey Mulligan, which ones would be?

    1. Emmy Rossum as Irene in DRIVE
Rossum is a powerful actress yet to be embraced as such. She’s not the same girl at the start of her career, she’s grown into a woman capable of losing herself into personas, to become them, a natural talent developed in years of work. Yet, in movies she barely get the chance to show those skills. Our loss. Since the first time I saw Drive, thought of Rossum as the perfect Irene. Has the ability to say much without talking, expressing a wide range of feelings through the eyes. Can play the damsel in distress remaining as a strong woman who could get in that kind of distress in the first place. Has the character. I totally see her fully immersed in the neo-noir city that Winding Refn built.

    2. Olivia Wilde as Sissy in SHAME
Wilde can be as vulnerable as vibrant and switch and merge those qualities in a second. From the flirty facade turned to uncomfortable and insecure on Her, to the natural feisty turned to human mess on Drinking Buddies, she has showed her chops to play someone as fragile and broken as Sissy, while still being way more than that beyond the chaos. And then comes the sexual side of Wilde. She simply has it. Whether she’s playing it or not, there it is – and that’s apart of her looks. Can you imagine Wilde lifting tension with Fassbender? I do.

    3. Kate Mara as Jean in INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS
Appears that casting directors (and directors for that matters) easily sets in a narrow pool of choices and struggle to get out of there. Jean could be played for a lot of actors, I didn’t find an unique quality brought by this almost uninspired, boring choice. Mara could pulled-off leaving her stamp on the character, making Jean of her own – part because I see talent in her, part because I imagine her eager for that kind of opportunity of work with the Coens. Or at least I think so. Kate, unless Rooney, still is in the verge of finding her breaking role; this credit may have helped to get it.

I never thought of Emmy Rossum as Irene in Drive. Now I’m hungry for a remake with the same actors but with Emmy instead of Carey.

I think Kirsten Dunst would have been a lovely choice for the role Carey played in Shame. She can sing, she can act (see: Melancholia) and her chemistry with Fassbender would have been off the charts.

What a wonderful thread. I simply can’t bear watching Carey Mulligan’s attempts at acting (which usually involve almost bursting into tears).

Great Gatsby: I actually kind of like the suggestion above of Kate Hudson. She has the right cold bitch, out of my league aura that Daisy should have had.

Shame: Kelly Reilly, she may not be much younger than Fassbender, but they look like brother and sister which would have made the story that much more unsettling.

Drive: Rooney Mara – I prefer her doe eyes to Mulligan’s doe eyes.

Far from the Madding Crowd:  watch the old Julie Christie movie.

Mia Wasikowska as Kathy in Never Let Me Go
Tessa Thompson as Jean in Inside Llewyn Davis

I’m going to steal two from above, being that they’re fantastic suggestions. Kiera Knightley would be a fantastic Daisy, and Mia Wasikowska would have been the perfect choice for Never Let me Go. Then I would pitch in Michelle Williams as another choice for Inside Llewyn Davis. They have the same kind of look, but their acting style is dramatically different. I prefer Williams in most cases, and I think she would have been far better suited for the role. I actually liked Mulligan in Far from the Madding Crowd. That casting was pretty spot on for what I pictured in the book.

While I can’t quit my Emmy Rossum casting (never!), if they had kept the script as original intended with Irene being latin instead of changing her once they wanted Mulligan for the part, my choice would be Catalina Sandino Moreno or Ana de la Reguera or Naya Rivera.

I’m really interested in knowing who you’d cast.

I’m up for pretty much all of your choices! Kelly Reilly for Shame, Mia Wasikowska for Never Let Me Go, Kate Hudson for The Great Gatsby, Michelle Williams for Inside Llewyn Davis… all so great!

    Damn. We’re good at this.

Right?! We should call Winding Refn and tell him to reshoot all the Carey scenes with Emmy instead. Trust us, Nicolas. We got this.

Kirsten Dunst as Sissy in Shame?! Fuckin. Genius. Can’t get better. Now I need this.

These are my ‘fan’ choices, because I think they’re talented and charismatic:

Rosario Dawson. She’s incredible in everything.

Aubrey Plaza. She’s an exciting to watch actor.

Ana Brenda Contreras. I was fortunate enough to see her in one episode of Teresa.  Plus, she’s absolutely gorgeous.

Cameron Diaz. Yes, Cameron. I think she could pull this one off.

Jessica Alba. Why not? She has a similar appearance and I thought she was good in Machete. Seriously.

Michelle Rodrigues. It might have been nice to see if she has the range for this role, but I’ve always liked her and would have preferred to see her instead of Mulligan.

Zoe Saldana. Now there would be a bold(er) choice.

And others. I love your choices of Catalina and Ana btw. Naya Rivera I’m not familiar with.

Ana Brenda Contreras is, indeed, gorgeous, stunning!… but her acting experience is limited to crap projects. A real waste.

For a second I thought of Aubrey Plaza too! I like her but I don’t see her in the part.
