What if Reese Witherspoon has submitted in Supporting Actress instead of Lead for Walk The Line. How would this have changed the LA and SA races? Would Felicity Huffman sailed her way to a win? Who would have replaced Reese in Lead? And how would this have changed the Supporting Race? Who would she have knocked out? would she have won?

Yeah, I suspect Huffman would’ve prevailed, with Knightley a dark horse. Ziyi Zhang or Joan Allen would’ve taken Witherspoon’s slot, with Witherspoon knocking out McDormand and winning that Oscar.

Even though Witherspoon won Best Actress from the Golden Globes, the New York Film Critics, SAG and BAFTA, I am willing to play along and say she wound up in the Supporting race.

I don’t think the Academy voters were as enamored with Huffman as GoldDerbyites. Frankly, if the beloved Dolly Parton couldn’t win the Oscar for the theme song, I don’t think a significant majority wanted to vote for this film.

I suspect that the vacancy in the Best Actress line up would have been filled with Laura Linney from The Squid and the Whale. Linney is a multiple nominee and well respected. I have often thought Witherspoon won, because the field was weak.

With a surprise nomination, a larger audience would have seen this domestic drama and Linney’s powerful performance as a woman struggling as her marriage fails. I think that would have turned the tide and gotten Linney her Oscar.

Voters might not have been enamored with Hoffman. (It wasn’t a great performance then, and it’s aged horribly). However, they probably would have settled for her with no truly baity alternatives. I doubt Linney would have been nominated yet alone won, which is a slight shame since everything about ‘Squid’ is almost perfect. Daniels couldn’t get in despite his performance having considerable more acclaim and hype than hers. If Joan Allen actually had a campaign maybe it would have turned out differently.

I think Reese may have been heavily criticized for category fraud….although there is worse out there.

I don’t think any of her fellow nominees would have won without her in the lineup. Not even Felicity.
There may have been room for worthy perfs in either category for say, Taraji P Henson, or perhaps Renee Zellweger.

She would have had a very tough time in Supporting against the likes of Adams, who wasn’t going to win for a number of reasons, and my personal favorite supporting perf, Rachel Weisz. Williams is no slouch either.

Interesting question and speculation. But the truth is, and I suppose I can post this in the UNPOPULAR OPINIONS thread, but I think Reese deserved her Oscar and for a number of reasons, including her natural ease, her singing. A deserving, organic take on the incredible June Carter Cash.

Hmm, nobody seemed to care that much about category fraud this year when two huge category fraud contenders were nominated in supporting and one of them ended up winning. I think people need to face the fact that the Academy couldn’t care less about category fraud and it’s just an issue on the Internet.

Ugh…say it aint so, Joe….say it aint so…..

It diminishes the relevance of the separate categories. Very unfair imo.

Then there’s the issue of eliminating genders for categories. Uh-huh.

Joaquin deserved the win more than Reese. Both were excellent though.
