Well, it looks like people thought the Academy got it right by awarding Anne Hathaway for her rendition of Fantine as that performance received 20 votes as opposed to 8 for The Dark Knight Rises.

For the next poll, would you have recognized Bradley Cooper for his powerful and grounded restraint in The Place Beyond The Pines or his more bombastic turn in American Hustle?

You guys have about 8 days to decide.

Place Beyond the Pines is my choice, but I am wondering if people think he’s lead or supporting. He could really be either.

Let’s see….a horny guy with a perm and a pot belly? Or, a lucky guilt-ridden “hero”?

I liked him best in Guardians of the Galaxy. Of the two above, I’ll throw a dart and go with the ‘better’ film, which is Pines.

I don’t think that he’s such a great actor or a three-time Oscar nominee-caliber, but in “Amercian Hustle” only he and Lawrence were acceptable. Cooper was probably 6th on my personal ballot as well. So “American Hustle”, even if I dislike that movie.

I don’t think either were stellar performances. He really didn’t do anything in Hustle to warrent a nomination. Not saying he was bad or anything but he just didn’t do anything award worthy.

The Place Beyond The Pines proved that his nomination weren’t due to the David O’Russell magic, there’s actual talent in that man’s body so I’m going with that (also because TPBTP is SUCH a better movie than American Hustle). A friend of mine saw Cooper in The Elephant Man on Broadway and thought he was incredible.

I have to say “AH” becuase I found him to be a hair better in that then “TPBTP”.

For me it’s not even close- he’s much better in ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’. Granted, he still wouldn’t make my personal ballot (his co-star Ryan Gosling would though), but he’s great in the film. It’s still one of his best performances and in one of the best movies he’s been in.

Place Beyond the Pines, definitely. To me, Cooper was the weak link of American Hustle, and I was enthralled by his work in Silver Lining’s Playbook.

TPBTP is the better film, but I remember his role to be small. He gave the best performance in AH, so that was fine.

I dont remember it that way. He dominates the latter half of the film, in his own, Cooperish way. One could make a pretty good argument for Bradley being Lead.

So it means that he’s being mediocre like usual, but as Hollywood cannot do better, it is considered as being “good” in a weak field? 🙂 Happens every time.

It is quite hard to give a spoiler-free opinion on the placing of any actor in The Place Beyond The Pines, but here goes my best effort.

Because the film is split into thirds, of which Cooper dominates the second, and is pushed more towards the background in the third, I believe he should be placed as a Supporting Actor. The film is far superior to American Hustle, but at the time, I did place both American Hustle and Cooper into my personal lists, and neither Pines or Cooper for his role in this. I suppose that stems from the buzz that Hustle had around the time. Reflectively I would decide that his role in Pines & the film itself should have got in ahead of Hustle and his role in this.

Admittedly, if there was one of the ‘Best Supporting’ role polls and it was a choice between Gosling & Cooper in Pines, I would have to go for Ryan Gosling hands down. He did make my top five last year, and was a very close second to Leto.

I think Cooper is very good here. I agree with AMG however. Gosling, is a phenom in this.
