What are some examples of nominations where the right actor (or composer, cinematographer, etc.) was nominated – just for the wrong film?

Jessica Chastain – The Tree of Life vice The Help
Leonardo DiCaprio – The Departed vice Blood Diamond
Dennis Hopper – Blue Velvet vice Hoosiers
Kate Winslet – Revolutionary Road vice The Reader

Bradley Cooper – The Place Beyond The Pines over American Hustle

And I agree with Maxwell and Jake about Winslet for Revolutionary Road over The Reader.

I guess a few could make a case for Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games vs Silver Linings Playbook. I like both equally though.

There was nothing Oscar-worthy in “The Tree of Life” (TERRIBLE FILM) or Chastain’s performance in it. She was rightfully nominated for  her best performance in “The Help”

Also Winslet was worthy for BOTH. She should have happen for BOTH. Oscar rules, I know.

Keira Knightley – The Imitation Game v. Begin Again

She was worthy for both. She was easily the best in the Supporting Actress category and would have been a very worthy 4th-5th in the Leading Actress category.

Bradley Cooper (Place Beyond The Pines over American Hustle)

Jennifer Lawrence (Hunger Games over Silver Linings Playbook)

Also, I know it’s quite early, I have a feeling I will go with Alicia Vikander for Ex Machina over The Danish Girl.

Kevin Spacey should have won in ’95 for Seven instead of The Usual Suspects.
