RIP to a legendary and trailblazing actress. Ruby Dee was just referenced in Audra McDonald’s acceptance speech at this year’s Tonys. It also shows the power of the Ruth Younger role that she originated on Broadway and reprised in the film version (that she should have been Oscar-nominated for) that the role is STILL winning awards today (this time to Sophie Okonedo!). Sad news, but her legacy is a powerful one that shouldn’t be forgotten. Hopefully she’s at peace with Ossie Davis now.

    R. I. P. Ruby Dee!

I remember how badly I wanted to see her win in 2008 even if I knew it was such a short role – I loved her very much!

She was such an amazing actress and activist.

Dee should’ve been nominated for Jungle Fever, along with Jackson, but finally got some love for American Gangster.

I am so sorry to see about this loss. It’s really amazing to me that Ruth Younger is the only part to win its portrayer the Tony Award for Featured Actress in a Play twice and that neither win was for Dee. I think that she totally deserved a Tony and Oscar to go with her Emmy for Decoration Day and her Grammy for the Spoken Word version of her book with her husband and still love watching her SAG win here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPEneTuGiMY). I didn’t really care whether it would have been considered a lifetime achievement Oscar win for American Gangster or not, and personally didn’t really like any of the other performances more, so I was really rooting hard for her to win then. But she leaves behind a strong legacy in all media, something few others ever accomplish.
