So A24 has announced that it will give Room, which will premiere at TIFF, a limited release on Oct. 16 then expand nationwide Nov. 6. Room is based on a 2010 novel about a young kid and his mother (Brie Larson) who are confined into a 10 by 10 room, but come up with a plan to escape. It is also directed by Lenny Abrahamson who did last year’s Frank and co-stars Oscar club members William H. Macy and Joan Allen.
Because A24 is gearing this as an awards player, I think Brie Larson could be a dark horse in the Best Actress race. It helps that she is a talent on the rise with this and Trainwreck out the same year as well as starring in the upcoming blockbuster Kong: Skull Island.
What do you guys think? Do you think this seems like a viable awards player? Let’s discuss.July 29, 2015 at 8:42 pm #190619
Larson’s a bigger name now than she was with Short Term 12. If this performance is as good as that one, she should be a lock for a nomination.July 29, 2015 at 9:03 pm #190620

I agree ET. She should’ve gotten a lot more recognition for her work in ‘Short Term 12’ (she received a Critic’s Choice nomination and that was pretty much it), but she is very talented and has been on the verge for a little while now. I’m hoping she delivers another slam dunk performance and finally gets the notices she should be getting.July 29, 2015 at 9:34 pm #190621

I wasn’t familiar with the title at all, including the book it’s based on, but that trailer…BRIE EFFING LARSON. I’ve been waiting for her moment for a while. This could be it. I hope she shakes up the race.July 30, 2015 at 7:24 am #190623

Agreed. No matter how good Brie Larson looks in it (and she does!), this doesn’t seem Oscar type.
I hate it when you’re (probably) right sometimes. But I am still hoping you’re wrong here. I’m hoping this film becomes a big breakout for her.
