So I rewatched Neighbors the other day and as I was observing Rose Byrne’s performance, I was left thinking “Where was her Oscar campaign?”. Seriously, I thought her performance was so hilariously nuanced as she nails all the different dimensions of her character: The devoted wife/mother bear, the sex kitten, and the cool neighbor. While I loved seeing Seth Rogen be his usual funny self and Zac Efron shed his Disney image as a sinister frat boy, the movie belongs to Rose Byrne who continues to prove how underrated her talent is.
There was this consensus that 2014 was a “weak year for actresses”, but I say pffft..tell that to women like Rose Byrne. She brought us a refreshing female face to the raunchy comedy genre. I would’ve put her in Lead and said “give me Byrne and I’ll give you Jones or Witherspoon.” But I would’ve also understood if she were put in Supporting.
If you have seen the film, do you agree Byrne was robbed of awards glory? Let’s discuss.September 4, 2015 at 4:46 pm #193927
Rose has a SPC movie coming this year. She plays Susan Sarandon’s daughter.September 4, 2015 at 10:36 pm #193928
Well I think just because someone is good in a film it doesn’t mean she should get an Oscar nomination. Like I loved her in this movie and she’s definitely among my Top 15 ladies last year, but come on…she is just not Oscar-worthy in this.September 5, 2015 at 3:19 am #193929
I wouldn’t have given her an Oscar nomination. Definitely a Golden Globe nod for actress in a comedy tho. She’s terrific in the movie.September 5, 2015 at 4:57 am #193930
She is quickly becoming one of my favourite comedic actresses working today. I loved her in Neighbours, but then she was even better in Spy. If she was in the lineup last year, I would have been happy about it, but there were lots of great contenders last year and I was pretty fine with the actual lineup.September 5, 2015 at 1:27 pm #193931
This is one of the most overhyped performances in awhile. She was adequate, I guess?September 5, 2015 at 6:14 pm #193932
She was good, but Oscar worthy? No way. A Globe nom for sure (even though I was fuming that Kristen Wiig was left off for The Skeleton Twins).
I’m bummed she never won a Globe, Emmy or even a SAG Ensemble for Damages. Five seasons of great performances worthy of a crowded mantle, if for no other reason than matching Glenn Close in her career-best role.September 6, 2015 at 9:23 am #193933

She was better in “Spy”, I echo that Zac Effron was the true star of that movie, eletric performance.
