Cool. I’m just gonna ignore all late releases.

Moonlight is no SAG material.  Although I’d love it to be, because it surely looks more promising than Fences and Birth of a Nation combined. Anyhow, it will be one of those films that does better at the Oscars than the guilds.

I think it’s pitch-perfect metacritic score(of course it probably won’t stay in that number for long) should actually worry people since we’ve always seen that those little indies that critics praise to the high heavens, the ones that tell their story in too realistic and a quiet way can be perceived as too artsy/divisive to the general audience(see:majority of film industry)

If Viola starts to gain traction like DiCaprio did last year, SAG would nominate her even if they don’t see the movie beforehand because of late release.

The art house quality of Moonlight won’t prevent its cast from ensemble recognition at SAG.

SAG Ensemble again is going to be crazy this year.

The prevailing stance/rule with SAG is: No Screener, No SAG Ensemble love. The earlier the screener the better the chance. (And if your name is Helen Mirren, get your SAG dress ready. LOL)

It’s Thanksgiving. All major contenders have sent screeners out to SAG by now, except Fences, Silence and La La Land.

The 2500 strong SAG Nomm Comm selectees are not just in LA/NY. They are scattered across the different states. So SAG screening Q&A’s in NY/LA will only get you so far. And not that far.

So what will be this year’s The Butler/Best Exotic/Trumbo in ensemble category?

There’s always one cookie low profile crowd pleaser thing in there that doesn’t translate to Oscar race.(along with few other individual noms)

Lion? Seems like it fits the bill. A conventional tear jerker with 3 recognizable faces at its poster.

Would female bloc rather rally behind Hidden Figures or 20th Century Women?

I have La La Land in but I wouldn’t be surprised if they left it out as it’s more of a director’s showcase than anything. Moonlight will be the indie pick. Did they send Silence yet? Cause if not, I don’t think it gets in. Lion is SAG bait so yeah I can see them liking that. I’m iffy on 20th Century Women. I saw somebody say Florence has a chance but ehhhhhh that’s really a Streep/Grant show.

Queen of Katwe is the film that keeps popping up. I know 2 people on the committee this year (they ecstatically informed me in April when they received their SAG Nomm Comm duty notification). One in New York and one in San Francisco.

Apparently Queen of Katwe played like gangbusters.

Damn, I thought Fences was done considering they started screening a couple weeks ago. Never expected Silence but that is worrisome for La La Land. If La La misses SAG……
