This is confusing me on the divirsity issue. SAG had no film acting nominees of color last year either and this year there was only Idris Elba.

SAG has a much latger voting group and I would assume it is much more diverse than the academy. So would increasing and changing the number of voters really help or were the last two years just low on actors of color who got good jobs.

I don’t really know what to think on the issue and was curious what people thought in regards to SAG awards.

i totally trust the SAG, this year Idris Elba is the only single black actor nominee in the best supporting actor category, Jacob Tremblay 9-year-old is nominated, Helen Mirren 70-year-old is nominated twice, the entire ensemble cast of “Straight Outta Compton” contains black actors except Paul Giamatti, so diversity is real. We have to trust the voting process only actors are voting, so they know what they’re doing !…

Oh yes. I forgot SAG nominated Compton for ensemble. If the Academy had just included Compton as Best Film and Elba they would have saved themselves a lot of flack.

Actually SAG is now journalists too. It is SAG/AFTRA so it includes tv anchorpeople and reporters from around the country and even radio people too. It is not just actors anymore strangely.

This is a good point. Thanks for bringing it up.
One thing you can’t blame about SAG is that it is the combination of a big diverse group of people and covers nearly all types of minorities under its umbrella. And they make sure their Nom.Com. members change every year so that different actors can be able to participate on the voting round.
It sounds like a broken record now, but what can you do when there is no minority to nominate?

Young-skewing, acclaimed blockbuster movies like Straight Outta Compton always do well at the guilds but that barely translate into an Oscar nom. Because Academy members are pickier than their Holywood counterparts and the ranking system decreases the power of popularity.
Bridesmaids, Gone Girl, Skyfall and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are some of the examples in recent years. And none of them were snubbed because of the voters racist tendencies.
