The eventual Best Picture winner has won 11 out of 21 times; just about 50% of the time. The ten winers that did not go on to win the Oscar have been: Apollo 13, The Birdcage (not nominated for BP Oscar), The Full Monty, Traffic, Gosford Park, Sideways, Little Miss Sunshine, Inglorious Basterds, The Help, and American Hustle.

Other films not nominated for BP have been: Get Shorty, How To Make An American Quilt, Nixon, Marvin’s Room, Sling Blade, Boogie Nights, Little Voice, Waking Ned Devine, Being John Malkovich, Magnolia, Almost Famous, Billy Elliot, Adaptation, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, In America, The Station Agent, Hotel Rwanda, Hustle & Flow, Bobby, Dreamgirls, 3:10 To Yuma, American Gangster, Hairspray, Into the Wild (2007 had only one BP nominee: the winner – No Country For Old Men), Doubt, Nine, Bridesmaids, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, August: Osage County, The Butler, Bests of No Nation, Straight Outta Compton and Trumbo.

So a win in this category really doesn’t mean as much as far as predicting the eventual Oscar BP winner. The Birdcage has been the only winner that did not go on to get a BP Oscar nomination. Braveheart is the only BP Oscar winner since 1995 that was not an Ensemble Cast nominee at SAG. I think this is a year when the 2nd film will do so: La La Land.

Some ensemble casts that I wish had won: Magnolia for 1999, The Hours for 2002, The Aviator for 2004, Brokeback Mountain for 2005, The Departed for 2006, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for 2012, August: Osage County for 2013, Boyhood for 2014…

HELL YES to wins for The Hours, Brokeback Mountain, and August: Osage County. And yes, it is likely that La La Land will break the record, although I think it will ultimately go to Moonlight. But…who knows?

It usually foretells a late surge by a dark horse movie. Cases in point: Shakespeare In Love, Crash, and Spotlight. If Hidden Figures wins this year I would watch out for it for the Oscars.

Why SAG always ignores Meryl in Ensemble category?

I don’t read anything into the La La Land “snub” here – it’s a two-person show and a nomination recognizing ensemble work would’ve made close to zero sense. It’s unequivocally the Best Picture juggernaut.

Because Streep vehicles usually are all about her.

I disagree. If they really loved the film they would’ve nominated it anyway. I would also argue John Legend plays an important part in the movie plus short roles like that of JK Simmons’s have been nominated in the past.

Another thread justifying the La La Land left out? Hm.

Anyway, Hidden Figures has this on lock. Moonlight is in close second though.
