I wasn’t sure whether to put this in the Oscars or Tonys section, so I chose this one since it’s more widely read by GD members.
Which actors from film/television do you wish to see on Broadway/the stage? What roles should they play (like if they were the star of a play/musical from the past, what play/musical/role would it be)? Which directors/playwrights/actors should they work with?June 6, 2013 at 2:44 pm #103012
Philip Seymour Hoffman
Laura DernJune 6, 2013 at 2:50 pm #103013
Amy Adams should just do a broadway musical version of Enchanted and win that Tony (to finally win an award)June 6, 2013 at 2:52 pm #103014
Danie Day Lewis
Lawrence FishburneJune 6, 2013 at 3:10 pm #103015
Daniel Day-Lewis has said that he is never going to return to the stage after a traumatic experience he had while playing Hamlet or Macbeth (unsure of which) back in the late 80’s.
Day-Lewis, Joaquin Phoenix, Ed Harris etc. are method actors – it’s unlikely that they would want to commit to a long term, 8-show per week Broadway show, although they would probably be phenomenal (Al Pacino is a method actor who has been enormously successful on Broadway, but at his current age I’m not sure if he still approaches roles with the method).
Laactingnyc, many of the names you listed (Hoffman, Keener, Kendrick, McDormand, Dern) actually are frequent Broadway actors, and very good ones too. McDormand won a very deserved Tony a few years ago, and Hoffman was nominated for one last year.
Jessica Chastain was recently on Broadway, but her performance was not that remarkable. Hopefully it was a fluke.
I personally would love to see Annette Bening on Broadway. She is not method, she is craft-based (she uses her imagination to create a character) and that is the style of acting that works better live. The same goes for Streep, Lange, Smith, Hopkins, the Bridges brothers and Firth.
Don Cheadle would absolutely shine on the stage.June 6, 2013 at 4:24 pm #103016
Ed Harris as Inspector Goole from An Inspector Calls – he’d easily win a Tony for it!
Amy Adams as Alice Leonowens from The King and I – like IrishMovieLover said it’d be nice to see her win a Tony!
Rooney Mara as Blanche DuBois from A Streetcar Named Desire – I don’t know why I think this would work but I’d wanna see it!
Mark Ruffalo as Ned Weeks from The Normal Heart – reprising his role from the upcoming TV movieJune 6, 2013 at 9:02 pm #103017
Robin Williams in a revival of Equus as Martin Dysart
Then he can finally win a Tony and get his EGOTJune 6, 2013 at 9:47 pm #103018
Jessica Lange in a production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night, which she was phenomenal in on the West End.
Meryl Streep in anything.
