Our Experts are starting to pipe in. Pls note that Anne Thompson will only list films she’s already seen. Otherwise, everyone else is scooting out onto limbs for all films in this year’s derby:

Tom, You’ve got Anne Hathaway in lead actress. Her character Brand was definitely supporting in the original Spielberg screenplay, Cooper (McConaughey) was the only lead. Though Chris Nolan has reportedly re-written the screenplay, from the trailers it seems like he has beefed up the roles of McConaughey’s adult children Jessica Chastain and Casey Aflleck. I doubt if the size of Hathaway’s role has been increased.

Is Julianne Moore going lead for Maps to the Stars?

I’m kinda surprised at the confidence in her considering the distributor, and the fact that Cannes Actress winners usually don’t show up on the Oscar radar.

But when they show up, the win is so delicious.

I’m glad to see four experts with Boyhood at no 1. I really think it has a shot, as the notable 12-year shooting period works as an unintentional gimmick (it’s actually not gimmicky at all) which builds a good awards-season narrative, comparable to The Artist standing out from the pack as a silent film. There are also elements to the story and characters of Boyhood which are distinctly American, despite it’s themes being very universal.

Another 4 have Unbroken at the top – is this really a major contender though? I thought the trailer seemed too cheesy and sentimental even by Oscar’s standards, and I mean the actual dialogue, not just the presentation.

Yessss but Holly Hunter did a Helen Mirren sweep with Best Actress that year. So I’ll have to see if Julianne Moore’s going to be undeniable this year. Fingers crossed. Also toes.

If necessary for consolidating her win, I would cross my toes too.

Chastain and Moore are frustrating. It seems like every single day I am switching them between lead and supporting.

Paramount’s Oscar rep tells me that Hathaway is “likely lead” — so that can change

Umm what is it up with a lot of the experts not having Amy Adams in their predictions. She and Julianne Moore are the most overdue for an Oscar currently

Umm because they are not experts just running blogs and awards sites.

At the moment we have no idea how much Big Eyes will factor into the race, or even how well reviewed the film or Adams’s performance will be. No reason for her to be unanimously predicted (I currently have her in 5th place in my predix).

They have to ‘see it’ first. Different strokes for different folks.

Most of the “experts” do not have Gone Girl in their predictions. They will regret that.
