Here are just some thoughts and
questions about Susanne Bier’s Serena to get a discussion going because
honestly I have no idea which way this one is going to go…

Here’s what it has going for
    it…

    – An Oscar winner in Bier as
director (best foreign language film – In a Better World)

    – An Oscar winner and two time
nominee in Lawrence (best actress  – SLP, WB) â€¨- An Oscar Nominee in
    Copper (best actor – SLP)

    – Based on Ron Rash’s well reviewed 2009 PEN/Faulkner Finalist and
    New York Times bestselling novel

    – Black List Script* (this
comes with an asterisk due to Kyle’s past projects)

    – A title character described as a “Depression-era Lady
Macbeth” (The New Yorker) frankly just sounds pretty cool and also like
something Lawrence could nail.- Lawrence and Cooper’s on screen chemistry â€¨

    …what it doesn’t…

    – A relatively unknown/untested
supporting cast (Jones and Ifans may be the exceptions here.

    – A narrative style that may
    not translate well to film

    – See* above

    … And what’s most troubling
    about it…

    – NO CONFIRMED US
    DISTRIBUTOR!!!
     (but a rumored September
    release)

    Now the questions…

- Most importantly…why no
    distributor

             – Is the film JUST
    THAT BAD?

             – Are the studios’
dance cards too full already?  â€¨

    – Will it have a big festival
    debut? Where?

    – Do you think Lawrence and
    Cooper will deliver?

    – Can Susanne Bier have success
this side of the pond with an english language film?

    – Will this be a surprise
critical darling or an underwhelming period drama?

- What, if any, are it’s
    awards chances?

Interested to see what people
think of this film’s potential. Please comment on any or all.

    1.    Most importantly…why no distributor

    My theories:
    A. Susanne Bier is also releasing Love is All You Need to the US market this year. Perhaps she hasn’t started really working hard to get Serena going.
    B. The studios might be playing hardball. With Lawrence and Cooper in this film, the studios know they will make money even if it is a flop, so they are trying to negotiate for the best profits.
    C. Susanne Bier might have made a flop. As far as I have researched, this will be her first completely English language film. Based on her history (including an Oscar win and another nomination for Best Foreign Language Film) I don’t think she would completely torpedo a film. Nonetheless, the possibility exists.
    D. Maybe it is amazing and many studios are fighting for it at the same time.

    2. Will it have a big festival debut? Where?

Cannes, I would guess if it is good.

    2. Do you think Lawrence and Cooper will deliver?

This movie is Lawrence’s to carry or break. She excels playing roles that place her against nature or the world, and she can go psycho or vulnerable at will. For this role she needs to be mean and cruel. Can Jennifer Lawrence make you hate her?

    3. Can Susanne Bier have success this side of
the pond with an english language film?

    4. Will this be a surprise critical darling or an
    underwhelming period drama?

    TBD.

    5. What, if any, are it’s awards chances?

I wouldn’t discount Lawrence getting another Lead Actress nomination since she has a lot to work with. Cooper doesn’t appear to have as much to work with, so who knows?

The script translates very well from the novel, it’s a very good script. As for the no distributor, I’d expect it to debut at Cannes but that release date will more than likely change at this point.

I think its a possibility that Jennifer Lawrence will receive a Best Actress nomination. I also hope Bradley Cooper gets a Best Supporting Actor nomination

I’m really hoping that Lawrence is amazing, and I also hope that she gets another Oscar nomination for this movie. If this movie gets crushed critcally and commercially, then its done for Oscar recognition

Same here. Lawrence is in my final five for a nomination for Best Actress. But, I think that Bradley Cooper might get a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Abscam or The Place Beyond the Pines. If he does get nominated for Best Supporting Actor in this film, it’ll seem like category fraud since he and Lawrence are the two co-leads.

Bradley character have big importance in the movie, not just Serena story but a couple story too. Cooper is co lead with Lawrence. Hope he will be nominated for best Actor.hope the movie find a distributor soon and be presented at TIFF like SLPB because for Cannes i’ts too early i think.and for release date Europe date is sept/october so i think the movie will be released in sept for US (i hope).so hope they find a distributor soon! can’t wait for this movie.

[/quote]I very much doubt Cooper will be nominated for this. He’ll have a better shot with TPBTP and Abscam.

I don’t have too much faith in this project myself. Having read the script I have trouble picturing Lawrence actually pulling it off. We’ll see.

Indeed we shall. From what I understand, her role is sort of a mix between Lady Macbeth and Daniel Plainview (played by Daniel Day-Lewis) in There Will Be Blood. As I said before, she will succeed if she can make us hate her. This is different than her normal roles which are all somewhat sympathetic characters. I think we’ll get a pretty good gauge of just how extensive her acting talent is when we see this movie (or we’ll see her weaknesses).

From what I read about it, it might be one of those movies that does really well critically and not at the box office. Saying that, I heard the book is a little dull but it has some really avid fans so it might do well. I don’t see an Oscar nomination in it’s future though besides maybe adapted screenplay and best picture.

It looks like they made this film before Silver Linings.

That’s my best guess. But it may divide critics as well, especially since Bier’s last American movie effort was considered a disappointment. It’s certainly not a typical blockbuster storyline, and it will be probably hard to swallow for your average audience. I’d say that the movie’s best hope for a nom is Lawrence, even if 3 lead nominations in 4 years is extremely rare (unless your name is Meryl Streep of course). It seems like the kind of role that’s hard to ignore.
It is however a question if she can pull it off. I admit, I had my doubts before SLP, since that was her first adult character to play, but look how that played out. This is definitely a whole new level of stretch for her though, so who knows?
I’d say that a TIFF release seems much more likely for this movie, but if they’re still not in talk with any studio, they might try to make it to Cannes to find some last minute distribution.

Nope. They shot this around last spring/summer. Silver Linings was shot in January.

I’m sure she mentioned in an interview they filmed this after SLP. She said she casually asked Bradley if he was up for shooting another movie together.
