In a perfect world, films and performances would win Oscars based on merit alone. But that’s not the way it works in Hollywood. Every year, MILLIONS of dollars are spent on Oscar campaigns, and the right promotional push can take you from an also-ran to a winner. Is this right? Should Oscar campaigns be axed completely and let the films stand on their own merit?

    Campaigning isn’t really the problem.

The problem is that there are so many voters, and none of them have any responsibility to actually watch any of the nominees before voting.

So, because they’re lazy and only vote for their friends, studios are forced to campaign for films or else they would never get noticed.

Good point. One thing they at least could do is have the studios send out screeners to voting members and leave it at that. Let them decide for themselves and actually have them WATCH all the movies. I know they get a lot of screeners. But if they have the time, they should put in the effort to pop them in the DVD player. It’s not rocket science.

Are you trying to shut down this site? WE LIVE OFF OF CAMPAIGNS. There just simply aren’t enough of them! I personally think every single movie should submit for categories they want to genuinely be considered for. Look at Snowpiercer last year. It was clear it wasn’t going to crack Best picture, but you plaster Tilda Swinton’s face all over Los Angeles, maybe she gets into the relatively weak field. Maybe it draws voters to Snowpiercer, and they notice the BRILLIANT production design and costume design and cinematography. You can complain about campaigning, but a movie like Transformers 4 can campaign hard for Best Picture, it won’t sway undecided voters. The point is to keep films in the conversation, and to show confidence in a film that the studio thinks is deserving.

I actually think it wouldn’t be a bad idea for a couple of years. This website would be even more busy. People would argue more and more over who has the better performance, best film, or best production. I also believe Oscar worthy fiilms would be released throughtout the year instead of the end of the year.

Sometimes greatness happens with Oscar Campaigns.

Look up Toy Story 3’s and then come back to me.

It depends. I think it helps little movies get their name out but alot of movies led by Fox Searchlight or Weinstein really don’t need the campaigns. I think a billboard with FYC names is the most you should do. Parties are dumb unless you are just screening the movie for voters
