Taking cue from the new guideline to allow this kind of a thread.

I am fine with the Supporting Actress bid for Streep for Into The Woods (ITW) so long as it is For The Win (FTW) and Oscar # 4  !!!

I think it is the smartest move to go supporting because The Baker and The Baker’s Wife are the leads of the show but the Witch has a resonable amount of time too.

The role in the stage play is not the lead, but given that it’s Streep, I could see it going either way. She doesn’t seem to like being looked at as Supporting, and would go Lead Actress if she felt she could get nominated there. I expect she has a large role, but being that she weaves in and out, it will all depend on the amount of impact she has on the audience.

Are these the same Streep (not Studio) reps who balked on her going Supporting for August: Osage County last year?  If so, then it has the blessing of Streep.

Nothing official yet from Disney?  Are they still on a wait & see mode?

Have you actually seen the stage musical?!
I would say she’s a co-lead and she should go lead. And it’s usually a star turn that competes in LEAD at the Tonys.
And if the performance is a sensation (and it could be), she could get a nomination. She was nominated for The Devil Wears Prada. It’s not your typical nominee in lead and yet, it’s one of the most beloved nominees in the category in the last decade.

I was in my High School production of Into the Woods, so that’s what I’m basing my knowledge on. It obviously wasn’t a big star playing the witch there, and I remember feeling that it was written as a large supporting role but never really the lead. She just comes in and leaves every once in a while, but it literally is supporting all the other plots, never really having a storyline for herself. That’s just my thought.

“Should” probably isn’t the right question.  The answer is that she “could” go either.  It’s been reported already that Disney will be pushing Streep supporting and Blunt lead.  Joanna Gleason won the Tony in lead for the Baker’s Wife.  That’s probably a more believable placing than the other way around, based on the stage play.

But this is Streep we’re talking about.  The could’ve arguably gone supporting for One True Thing, Devil Wears Prada, Julie & Julia and August:Osage County.  Her roles tend to be the the more noticeable, flashy, meaty than her younger counterparts’.  It would have been resonable to assume she would go the same way for Into the Woods.

I agree with Etchie that Streep may actually challenge for a win in supporting, assuming she’s placed there.  It’s got enough screen time and if Streep delivers vocally as impressively as we’ve been led to believe from comments by the director and those who have seen screenings, she’ll be in the conversation.  If that’s the real case, smart of Disney to campaign her there.
