Now that Visual Effects, Animated Feature, and even Sound Editing are typically getting at least five nominees in every year, should the rules be altered so five films can be recognized in Best Makeup and Hair annually? I personally think it’s a load of crap that this is the one category that’s never had more than three nominations. It’s not like the last couple Oscar seasons have been weak years for Makeup. 2013 would have been a much more interesting race if the final two spots had been filled by “American Hustle” and “Catching Fire.” 2014 has a potentially strong lineup too with “Foxcatcher,” “Into the Woods,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “The Hobbit,” “Exodus,” “Maleficent,” “Mockingjay Part 1,” “Selma,” “Mr. Turner,” “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” “Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,” and “Inherent Vice.” It just seems like a waste to deprive two deserving films of nominations here. The Critic’s Choice Awards can make room for five nominees. Why not the Oscars too? Hell, if the Emmys can make room for five nominees in each of their four makeup categories, the Oscars can expand to five nominees in one. What do you think?

Yes. There’s no reason for the lack of love.

Hell yes. Every category deserves 5 no matter what. No ifs ands or buts especially for Best Song. None of that 2 nominee crap. But definitly for Hair/Makeup

Hair and makeup are already sharing a category.  It should at least be a full one.  Sound has two full categories.

I agree. It’s not like animated features where you need a certain number of candidates to justify five slots. Every movie features makeup and hairstyling of some kind, so by restricting Makeup/Hairstyling to three nominees, you’re implicitly stating that the work of those artists is less impressive or less valuable than the work of sound editors, cinematographers, costume designers, etc.

    Well, not quite *never*… (1999 had 4).

But I see your point, though I kinda like that the branch consciously chooses to make it this way and if they only think, collectively, that 2 or 3 films make the cut, then so be it–even when those choices are curious, not to mention unpredictable.  It gives the category some personality, even if it remains one of the easiest categories to predict.

And take a period piece and put it up against a monster movie. One movie will probably have better hair design while the other has better make up. If sound can have 2, they can have 2
