I think its funny how all the supposed experts were loving Unbroken, American Sniper, and to a lesser degree, Inherent Vice and A Most Violent Year, and now they are scrambling to include Grand Budapest Hotel, Nightcrawler, and Whiplash to their lists.

I’ve had Budapest, Whiplash, and Nightcrawler as Best Picture Nominees since late September. Too bad the experts were too busy saying things that don’t really matter, like how Budapest wouldn’t make it because it was released too early etc.

Just like Leo was “due” to win an Oscar last year.

Shakira’s videoclip for that World Cup song Waka Waka or whatever. The perfect gif to express how much I DON’T care for the things this person is babbling about. I don’t even know how does this warrant its own thread.

Oh…sorry…my bad. I thought this was a website built around award predictions and that this was a forum about those movies and predictions. So pointing out that supposed experts aren’t actually experts is for some reason not able to be discussed.

And obviously you do care, you posted twice.

This is also a website recommended for people over the mental age of 10 so I’m not really sure how you fit in.

Well, if you’re giving them out…well, no. Why would I want a medal? Just pointing out that the experts aren’t really experts.

Yes, but there is a way of bringing up the point without coming across like you’re full of yourself, because you predicted three films early on and now they are gaining more traction. You basically slate the ‘experts’ and seem to claim that you are in fact a real ‘expert’. YOU PICKED THREE FILMS MATE, YOU DIDN’T CURE CANCER!

Nowt up with blowing your own trumpet, but a few swallows don’t yet make a glorious summer, and the potentiality for ending up with egg on your face is there. That’s the risk you’re running.

Am loving that Grand Budapest Hotel seems more likely to be getting its due.

I also look askance sometimes at the number of times the experts and so on change their minds over the course of the awards season. I sometimes look at some of their predictions as being more about what’s hot at a particular time (and rowing along with the conservative, consensus view of that time) rather than always being indicative of their true long-term fancies / gut feelings.

I agree…….. What do you want? A Medal? Do you want us to commend your instincts……. The Oscar nominations are not out yet so you could be wrong for all we know.

All right, allow me to make my point in a better choice of words (aka not sounding so conceited).

My point is that the folks who call themselves “experts” often offer arbitrary analysis, and are given creedence because they happen to write for a blog or run a website. I used the example of Leo before being “due.” American Hustle was another example last year. Selma is another one this year where you have folks saying that two “black” films in a row won’t win. I think Boyhood will win, but not because of that reason.

GermanGuidence – I totally agree with your post. They ride the popularity wave. Last year (it wasn’t at Gold Derby), someone mentioned that “Happy” might upset “Let it Go” because it was being played on the radio so much. Never mind that the Oscar voting had closed before Happy went crazy on the radio.

I’m fine with risking egg on my face. And I’ll do better at not sounding like a prick.

Obviously you can see my predictions here on Gold Derby, but if anyone is interested, I’ll be giving my reasoning for my picks on my blog later today. Its hauntedbyhumans.wordpress.com. If I end up with egg on my face, I’ll be the first to admit it.
