I just saw this movie today, and I have a few questions:

First off, Is Charliez Theron in any way a contender for any major trophy this season?  I would assume she’s at least a serious threat for a Golden Globe for Best Actress-Drama.

In terms of Oscar, does she even register? The movie’s obviously making a lot of money, so can box office help her get a slot?

If this movie is a threat for any award, is Charliez the only cast member likely to get noticed?   Personally, I thought Chris Hemsworth did good, if not great work in the film, but I’m not sure I’d give him an Oscar.

It’s made a dent at the Box Office, but how about it’s endurance there? Not in The Hunger Games range.
Charlize if far better here than in “Prometheus” imo; but then, she actually has something to do here besides standing around and scowling. She’s wicked in The Huntsman and Hemsworth is terrific! . But Oscar?
    Lololol!!!!!!

I was close to a visual orgasm when watching this. Art direction, lighting, cinematography are pretty fantastic. The story however was expectantly uninspired and Kristen Stewart nothing more than tolerable. My friend and I were both agreeing that any of the current starletts would have probably done a better job, but also couldn’t think of any of them who would resemble snow white better than Stewart. Can you think of anyone?

Absolutely not! The character is SO one note. Charlize is a riot, but the material (writing) isn’t strong enough. I can think of four maybe even five technical nominations the film deserves though. If a campaign for her is built, they would be smart to go supporting, she is gone for the whole mid-section of the film.

Solid flick with fantastic performance from Charlize Theron. MAYBE a Golden Globe nod for her but I highly doubt it. She’d be in supporting anyways.

It would be nice if they had cast someone who might actually be, ‘fairer’ than Charlize; not an easy thing. Unless, she’s ‘fairer’ than SPOILER what Charlize really looks like as “Ravenna”. Then, you’d have more options. But really, I have absolutely nothing against Kristen Stewart as an actor, although, I have seen her good to very good in two films thus far; but she is truly bland here imo. Bland, and sleepy-looking.

I do agree that Kristen Stewart did nothing for this film and I personally would have cast Dakota Fanning who can portray both wicked and innocent with ease.

I’ll go with Hailee Steinfeld. She’s about the right age, brunette (although, there are dyes and wigs, of course), and really ‘fair’. Plus, she’s shown she can act, at least in one film.

I would have went with Ellen Page. Why does Hollywood seem to have forgotten about this girl??

Well, I didn’t really see the emphasis being “beauty”, but more that the prediction was that Snow White would take over the kingdom, and THAT’S why the Queen wanted her killed.

I see. I suppose, I forgot about the fable it is based on.

Beauty is power in the film. The film starts out as being a statement about how women are useful to men as long as they are beautiful and youthful, and once women lose their glisten, men are eager to replace them. It is what drives Ravenna into using youth and beauty against men and taking over kingdoms; making what men seek into their weakness. Ravenna’s magical powers are driven by her beauty. As long as she is the most beautiful, she will be the strongest. That’s the reason her powers wane once Snow White begins to surpass her in beauty. I keep in mind that maybe the people of that kingdom just have different views on beauty than us….Different societies; different views on beauty.

I liked Charlize Theron in this film, but she is definitely not getting awards recognition for this. I do see a costume design nomination for Colleen Altwood. Very exquisite looking clothes she made for the evil queen.

So, you would have traded Stewart’s glumness for Page’s sarcasm? Still sounds like miscasting to me!

She’s in the new Woody Allen film and has two more up coming. I think she’s right where she wants to be. And, judging by her filmography, I would be surprised if she were to accept a role as Snow White, although, she could do it and do it well.

You nailed it Novic!!! Although, this fantasy land certainly got the ‘beauty’ part of things right with Ravenna in gorgeous mode.
