“Mad Max: Fury Road” could and most likely get nominated in all 8 technical categories at the oscars:

    Best Film Editing

    Best Cinematography

    Best Costume Design

    Best Production Design

    Best Makeup and Hairstyling

    Best Sound Mixing

    Best Sound Editing

    Best Visual Effects

Could it miss something? When was the last time a film was nominated in all 8 technical categories?

If it misses any of those, it’s Costume Design, but I think it will get that too.

I think it misses Costume Design. Cinderella, The Danish Girl, Carol, Brooklyn and Bridge of Spies are all better positioned to nab a nom here.

The most technical nominations is 7, which were:

    • Titanic
    • Master and Commander
    • Hugo

So Mad Max could set a new all time record if it makes those 8.

Also, the most nominations without a major nomination (Picture, Director, Screenplay, Acting) is 6, which were:

    • The Rains Came
    • Hans Christian Andersen
    • It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
    • Empire of the Sun
    • Who Framed Roger Rabbit
    • Terminator 2: Judgement Day

So if Mad Max is snubbed in picture and Miller is snubbed, it could set a new record there too.

    Crazy,

Titanic was nominated for all 10 below the line categories (and won all of them except make-up), and Master & Commander and Hugo had 8 each (M&C missed score and song, Hugo missed make-up and song)…

I guess if we include score as a technical category then the stats will be different. But does that count as technical?

Even if we consider Score and Song as non-technical categories (just “below the line”) Titanic still has 8 technical nods, the same as Master & Commander… Hugo would have exactly 7.

    Crazy,

    What record is that?!
TITANIC had all 8 nods. It didn’t get 7. It got all 8.

Original Song seems like an arbitrary and “on its own” category that more associatied with the artist than the movie; so I wouldn’t include that. But if we count the other sound categories as technical(or cinematography for that matter), score is not much different.

I looked up Wikipedia and saw that Titanic was not nominated for Best Production design

Ahhh it was called “Art direction-Set Decoration” as opposed to “Production Design” in 1998.

I wasn’st so sure about custome but after the guilds nominations and the BAFTA nomination, now I’m 100% sure is going to get in. Plus Jenny Beaven the women behind those Mad Max’s customes is not an unknown, she’s been nominated a couple of times in the Academy and won once.

Why not? The film deserves them, and more, such as Best Picture and Director.

I do think that if any film were to sweep the techs it should be this one. It was a technical marvel, and it would fit in every category, but I’m not sure that every category will feel the same. Makeup is often weird about who they nominate, even though this seems like a no-brainer. Similarly, I could see a Production Design snub happening, just because of all the period competition, which typically does very well there.
