When was the last time a Best Picture winner walked away with only two oscars, in this case, Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay? Or the Academy will give it another win, like when they gave away the Best Adapted Screenplay to 12 years a slave to make it look like a decent winner.

In 1952 “The Greatest Show on Earth” was the last one to win just 2 awards, precisely BP and a Writing/Story award.

If Spotlight is declared the BP of the year and the “at least 3” rule still applies, then I guess McCarthy has to win BD too, because it’s not going to win any acting awards nor best editing.

I still think there’s a chance that if either Keaton or Ruffalo are nominated (Ruffalo seems more likely now) and the other awards are divided on their winners for Best Supporting Actor (say if Stallone wins Globe, Elba wins SAG and Rylance wins BAFTA), then Spotlight could win the Oscar in that category. But that’s a big if.

On another topic mentioned in passing by the OP, no I don’t think 12 Years a Slave won Adapted Screenplay just to make it look like a decent winner. It still would have won there even if Gravity had been the all-out frontrunner. If there was any challenger it was Philomena but that was a longshot. 12 Years was probably further ahead for Screenplay than it was for Lupita.

Even if the current alternative to Spotlight, The Big Short, doesn’t win BD too, that one can still grab best editing and reach the 3 award threshold (it’s almost a lock to win best adapted screenplay as of today)…following the Crash & Argo way.

“Spotlight” is an original screenplay dude.

So, is “Spotlight” only winning two oscars?

So, is Spotlight only getting nominated for two Oscars?

I have Rachel McAdams in for now as the third nomination, but I could easily see her just missing.
