This was the rare year when she seemed a little vulnerable to being left out.

I don’t doubt her sincerity in her speech but I was wondering how calculated the whole timing of her lifetime achievement award was.

    Ideas?

With that performance, Globe and SAG nominations she was always getting in. People doubted her but they will come to their senses.

I never once doubted Meryl was getting a nom, but hello, that certainly will help. Her performance is incredible in “Florence” and I’d say she’s a lock for the nom.

Yeah I think she is now certain to be nominated. She’s been in my 6th slot the whole time, now gonna bump her up to 5th.

Yup. Plus this being the rare year that they are still voting after the ceremony. And the fact that they don’t usually award someone who is also a nominee. She must have some real pulls within the HFPA.

I didn’t think her special award would matter much since Meryl has always been a visible personality and didn’t need to get up on that stage to remind people her existence but then that Trump rant came… Damn.

That’s the safe bet. Bening and Henson could still make it in. Negga I think is out of the picture.

The nomination has been assured for a long time already. All tonight did was solidify it.

Why would you put Henson ahead of Negga? Negga’s gotten way more buzz then Henson has.

Because of Henson’s movie. But I think both are unlikely.

    I think it’ll be

    Bening
    Huppert
    Portman
    Stone
    Streep

Two legends in their 60s, a well-liked actor in her late 50s, an actress in her mid-30s and a starlet in her late 20s. The winner’s clear, but I really would love to see Huppert gain traction. I’m tired of people pretending Natalie is still unbeatable. She lost so many sure things so far and if her film isn’t a picture nominee, she simply will face an uphill battle. People mention Swank, but it was a completely different story.

I think a certain proportion of the Academy might see through this, and not give her a nomination. Also her speech was quite political, and that will definitely piss off Academy Trump supporters or people who don’t like entertainment and politics to mix. But I have a feeling she will be getting in.

The Globes gave her this prize because she wasn’t winning for Florence. Although, I prefer her out the contest completely, her speech tonight gave me a new found respect for her I never had prior.

I hope you’re right about Bening making the final five.

Who’s expected to see though this? Actors who adore her? Who’s given her 19 nominations?!
And I doubt she was thinking about Oscar when she made that speech? She has so many fans at the Academy that she doesn’t need the speech. And she could have reminded them of her greatness with a sweet and funny speech. She excels at them. She chose to actually make a statement. Too bad people want to make it look like something else.
