Sound editing and sound mixing. Who will win? Both for Mad Max? Both for Revenant? Split between MM and Revenant or something else will win?

The sounds of nature are too good to ignore and I guess The Revenant will have the edge in sound editing, maybe even in sound mixing.

Right now I guess we’ll see some splits in the tech categories

The Revenant takes Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, Make-up & Hair (and Actor)
Mad Max: Fury Road takes Cinematography, Editing, Production Design and Visual Effects.

But a split in the sound categories is pretty hard to predict if there is no clear favorite because after all – we don’t know how many of the voters actually get the difference between the two sound categories.

I think Mad Max wins Makeup over Revenant.

I think that Star Wars will take both Sound prizes along with Visual Effects. Going back to Gone With The Wind every film that has held the all time box office crown has won at least 3 Oscars and I think the trend will continue here. Plus, call me crazy, but I just don’t think Mad Max will turn out to be a film the Academy feels they have to give a bunch of awards to. Perhaps I’m wrong. Obviously if George Miller wins at DGA I will have to rethink my theory. I currently have Mad Max winning for Film Editing and Makeup.

As always I hope everyone is doing well.

Mad Max is going to be the big winner of the night. I believe it can win 8 awards

    1. Sound Editing
    2. Sound Mixing
    3. Production Design
    4. Hair and Makeup
    5. Costume Design
    6. Visual Effects
    7. Film Editing
    8. Best Director

    Star Wars….nuthing but Star Wars…

I’m not going to lie and say I am hoping for this. But that box office just may be pretty hard to ignore.

A split almost never happens unless the Sound winner was not nominated for Sound Editing (WHIPLASH, LES MIS, RAY, DREAMGIRLS, CHICAGO–see a pattern?).  In fact, the only film to win Sound Mixing and *lose* Sound Editing in the last 45 years was SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.  So unless you think BRIDGE OF SPIES will win, there won’t be any split.

My guess is for MAD MAX because the Academy really likes giving this to action films, though REVENANT and SW7 wouldn’t surprise me.  But in each case, whichever wins one will also win the other.

Sound editing only had three nominees before 2006, so comparisons are not as good.  For example, would there really have been a split the year that The Return of the King swept if it had gotten into the fourth/fifth slot for sound editing?  2006 was a weird year because the Oscars and BAFTA shared only one sound nominee (Dead Man’s Chest).  Casino Royale got eight BAFTA nominations and zero Oscars nominations, while Dreamgirls got eight Oscar nominations and two BAFTA nominations; Letters from Iwo Jima was ineligible at BAFTA altogether because it came out so late.  Furthermore, that was a long time ago and back when the BAFTAs were after the Oscars and more importantly back when only the branch voted on the award and not all of BAFTA.

So The Revenant is probably winning something.  What would be really interesting is if Mad Max wins both guilds.  But CAS awarded Birdman last year and Gravity the year before, so The Revenant seems right up their alley.

It is true that splits are almost always when a music film is not up for sound editing, but there is an exception and it has many parallels with this year.  Slumdog Millionaire was the BAFTA winner of Best Film and Best Sound, while The Dark Knight was a film with lots of cars, gunfire and explosions.

Or maybe Mad Max is just Avatar if it wins both guilds and The Revenant is The Hurt Locker.  But then how can you not vote Mad Max for a sound award?  Is this just a BAFTA oddity that rectifies at the Oscars, like how Mad Max won costumes at BAFTA, but I still expect Cinderella to get it at the Oscars because it is the obvious winner with the “most” in the category?  But then BAFTA has a great track record lately and still managed to award Mad Max in several other categories, so maybe the thinking that Mad Max is undeniable in sound is just an Internet thing like how we all love George Miller.  But which film did I have a harder time understanding Tom Hardy?  The Revenant!  How can that win?

    Hummmm….

Well music actually has a not very small role in Mad Max what with the war drumming and guitar playing so maybe it takes Mixing while The Revenant takes editing.

What about The Martian? It also had solid box-office, best picture nominee, sci-fi movie. Right now I have it pegged for sound-editing.

The Revenant will win Sound Mixing while that MM will win Sound Editing  or TR win both.

Yeah, honestly, it wouldn’t completely stun me if “Star Wars” picks up two or three prizes on Oscar night, including the Sound duo.

Right now, however, I do lean toward “The Revenant” in Mixing and “Mad Max” in Editing.

Should be a no-brainer for Force Awakens.  Maybe some sliver of justice can be salvaged from a lost evening.
