The movie-going public will probably write this off as a “Dreamgirls rip-off”, but I get the sense that I’ll enjoy this more than Dreamgirls’ obvious oscar-baiting.

Sorry to jump to this, but do you think the Globes and/or Oscars will jump on one of the three original Whitney songs and give her the win? It’s obviously now or never. That’s my biggest curiosity. Regardless, Whitney alone will have the house full that weekend. And that’s not a negative…It’ll be a nice sendoff to her career and if the original songs are awards worthy, the Oscar win will be the perfect bookend. We’ll see…

I believe this is more a remake than a rip-off.
And i don’t think there was any expectation of Oscar nominations other than for original song.
This movie was more to showcase the talents of two great singers, in a time-worn tale, while at the same time helping Whitney to return to doing what she does best.
It should be a great watch, even if it is no masterpiece.

No wonder Whitney Houston killed herself.

I think the person who has the highest stake in this movie is Jordin Sparks.  When Whitney passed and the news media reported that the studio would still be releaseing Sparkle as-planned, my first thought was that Jordin all of a sudden will have all eyes on her. Obviously the film will draw audiences from those curious to see Whitney’s final role. I don’t think it would be as buzzy had Whitney lived. I think Jordin has a potential platform here to rejuvinate her somewhat quiet career (at this point).

No matter how well it does or doesn’t do, I think we have just seen the NAACP Image Award Winner for Best Supporting Actress (Whitney Houston). I am definitely going to see this movie, no matter what the critics say. This trailer makes Whitney look like an amazing actress, which is something even The Bodyguard’s trailer couldn’t do.

Also, am I the only one who every time they see the title is reminded of Mariah Carey’s horrible movie?

It seems much more light-hearted than Dreamgirls tried to be.. I really hope it surpasses Dreamgirls in quality for all those Whitney fans out there.

Did Houston write any of those songs? She wrote few, if any, of her songs throughout her career, so if she did write these it would be a major departure.

I do not think Whitney is credited with any of the new music.. Cee-Lo could garner his first Oscar nom tho. Houston’s only shot would be acting, which this film does not appear to be an award-baity film. I’ll see it for the entertainment value of it.

The original “Sparkle” is a personal guilty pleasure. I loved the music and performance by Lonette McKee as Sister.

This trailer gave me VH1 produced TV movie. People will go support the film because of Whitney but I doubt it recieves much critical or financial success.

I’m worried for the story and direction. The cast looks sufficient enough. Jordin was the right choice to play Sparkle.

It’ll be entertaining, at least. I love films like this.

The trailer looks interesting. I’m really curious in seeing how Carmen Ejogo pulls off the role as Sister. Carmen is an underrated actress and I’m hoping that this role helps her gets some mainstream recognition. Whitney looks fun and relaxed in this performance.
